I don't think that anyone would deny the fact that Christianity was used throughout history as a vehicle for political aspirations, military conquest, and a host of wretched things.
It comes back to the same truth about humanity: we value self-interest and self-preservation (be it personal or cultural) above all else. This is true for everyone.
EDIT: That being said, I don't think that's ok nor do I condone that attitude. It's just the truth if we are honest with ourselves.

and then the collective group of christians and non-christians says, "yep, they did. and then they grew out of it and got with the times and stopped killing in the name of their God."
