Only problem is who will keep replacing and buying new batteries?...like the old cameras, the money was made in selling film
Just a few points:
(1) That didn't keep Lithium batteries from replacing Ni-Cd or Ni-Mh batteries. For all their problems, Lithium batteries are infinitely superior to their predecessors so they won the day.
(2) Device manufacturers will drive demand. Apple devices have been equipped with non-user replaceable batteries for years and other manufacturers are following suit. A technology that can make the battery live throughout the expected life of the device and make it give a better user experience would make their product more appealing.
(3) Lithium batteries go all explody when damaged. There's an ongoing push to outlaw their shipment by air. Some carriers already refuse to carry them unless they're installed in a device. An alternate technology that was both superior in performance and safer would probably be the tipping point that got the Lithiums banned from air (and maybe other forms of) transportation and you can't sell what you can't ship.

Who said anything about lasting forever?
I said the life of the device. For a smart phone, you're probably looking at 3 years or so. For a tablet or laptop, 5-6.
As I said, Apple's already making the battery pretty much an integrated part of the device. They're not user-replaceable. If they can go to a better, cheaper, and lighter technology they'll do it in a heartbeat and further increase their profit margin by charging you more up front for something that costs them less to purchase and support.

Yea, I agree. But the manufactures count on a big portion of their users to replace phones quickly. I would not look for them to make it last much longer. But I understand your point.

This will go the way of the 1 dollar cancer test that student designed last year...he will get paid millions by Duracell or something for the patent then it'll never see the light of day.
If he refuses the money then Duracell will lobby the govt to ban the product due to environmental concerns.
Welcome to America

You don't understand man, government fixes that problem by working with corporations and regulating them.
