When I think truly Deep South, I'd go with South and West Georgia, south and central Alabama, Mississippi, the delta region of ark, north Louisiana, and west TN.
New Orleans and south LA are a unique culture.
N GA, E TN, upstate SC, W NC, and SW VA are very similar. Southern mountain culture.
Lowcountry SC up though Eastern/Central NC and VA are more similar to each other than they are to other "Deep Southern" areas to the west. You could almost throw Savannah in with this region as well. Different agricultural backgrounds, more colonial influence, different cultural influence in ports in Charleston, Richmond, etc. vs. New Orleans, Mobile

BigOrangeBri got his map right.....I was born and raised in the Arkansas delta near Memphis and We are DEEP SOUTH all day long....Surprisingly, even the Missouri Boothill is deep south in culture and even climate with a Zone 7B climate. The Delta of Arkansas has tons of Cotton fields, some Spanish Moss/palmettos in the lower Delta, Blues Heritage in W.M. and Helena, Birthplace of Johnny Cash, Gator Hunting, and we call our ditches bayous....

Agreed. I was hunting a few years back in central TN way up in the hills outside of a little town called Whitehouse. Went to eat lunch at a BBQ place and by the looks on their faces you'd think they'd never seen a black person IRL.

You were in White House, remember?
South Central TN has a higher per-capita black population I suppose.
Probably cause Alabama.

Cotton? I think you mean primarily Soy beans & rice. Ditches are ditches or drainage canals. And I have never seen anyone going gator hunting, granted they just started issuing tags maybe 3-4 years ago.
SE Missouri, NE Ark to SW Ark diaginally down towards pretty much BR and maybe 200 miles into east Tex are Deep South for the west.
Eta: I wouldnt put any of the gulf coast as Deep south just because it's so migrant just like the cities.

Look dude ... I was born and raised in Crittenden County, Arkansas....Look at a map of the Delta or that County ...Hundreds of Bayous on the map. Signs for Dry Bayou and 15 Mile bayou are on Interstate-55 near Marion. And we have had a legal Gator hunt since 2007 in Arkansas. I have friends that have seen 13 footers crossing the road in Proctor. You seem to be ignorant of the Delta. Folks where I grew up call ditches bayous without thinking about it. I would say the Arkansas Delta AND the coastal Plain are Deep-South in Arkansas. BTW... There are TONS of Cotton along I-55 alone...Tons! I bring up Gators, Bayous and such because they are indicators of culture and Climate that coincides with that of Mississippi/Louisiana which the Arkansas delta/Coastal Plain have much in common with. IMHO ..It's hard to be more Deep South than the Delta.

It's hard to include metro Atlanta as the Deep South anymore.

People seem to use political boundaries to describe cultural ideologies for every state. It's true in some cases, but not in the case of Arkansas. The Arkansas delta is very much Deep South.
