If you attack the olympics you're basically picking a fight with the world. That endangers people of almost every nationality. It is a little close to Chechnya for my liking but I don't think any of them are dumb enough to piss off every major military in the world.

All the Russians need is a reason to go in there and whip even more arse

As much as the Chechens would love to embarrass Russia and other reasons they also don't want to basically invite Russia into going in there and running rough shod over them with the world's backing

Hopefully nothing happens, but if anything does I'd think it would be more in the vein of an Atlanta or Boston type bombing where it's a "minor" type of incident that mostly hurts or injures spectators. It will be there to make an impact and to bring attention to the issues that they desire to bring to to forefront, but I can't see anything happening that would make me think that any country should pull out of the Olympics altogether. Warnings to people travelling to the Olympics? For sure, but not a complete withdrawal.

Not taking anything away from Boston, that was a horrible incident, but I'd bet 80% of the people that followed the fallout from that could even point out Chechnya on a map, I'd bet the number is similar even now less than a year removed from the incident. The media shitstorm is fleeting, but it's what they want and the mere threat of a terrorist incident in Sochi has gotten most of that before the Olympics have even started.

There is a very real threat from domestic terrorism at the Sochi Games. That's why Putin has 40,000 soldiers on hand to guard visitors.

There are many Muslim groups, I'm sure, with plans to disrupt the games. My fear is that, because Russia has so many internal enemies and because Sochi will be on a world stage, a spectacular attack on the order of 9/11 will take place. A small nuclear bomb would do the trick.

A little part of me is rooting for the Chechnyans.

They are what we were 240 years ago.

Must've missed the part where colonists committed atrocities in London

Outside of rebelling the Chechens aren't very similar to the colonists. At all.

Russia is prickly and hardcore. I think they'll protect us just so their reputation isn't ruined. I trust Putin with this, since he's probably the one man worldwide that you don't frick with.

I feel like if the US officially pulled out then its letting terrorist win. I know terrorist aren't exactly the most logical people in the world but committing an act of terror at the olympics in Russia just isn't a good idea. The Russians aren't going to play the political game if you kill Russian athletes or citizens/embarrass them. They don't have to worry about the media tying their hands behind their back like the US does. Also if the terror attack kills a US citizen then good luck on the US trying to back down Russia from crushing your country. It would be a sort of terrorist won a battle but sealed their fate on a larger scale.

Yep. It should just be business as fricking usual. If we pull out, then we're cowards and let the terrorists win.

yea frick that. the chechnyans are dirty pieces of shite.

The chechyans would end their cause if they pulled one here to try and embarrass the Russians. Go ahead and embarrass the Russians and see how the respond. Also see how it works when instead of the rest of the world trying to stop Russia, the rest of the world is egging them on to end your country.

EXACTLY. fricking with the US already ends poorly despite the litany of bureaucratic issues the US deals with and the ones they even skirt around. Piss off the Russkies and the only people Putin and co answer to is themselves.

And yea, man, the only thing stopping Russia from full on kicking their asses is the foreign backlash as they continue to buddy up with Eastern Europe and Germany. Attack the Olympics and you'll have the West giving them the thumbs up and give Putin a splendid opportunity to show off his nation's military might after it kinda looked weak when they went in to scare the ever-loving shite out of the Georgians. And I wouldn't blame them.

Hell, they're bringing back the Cossacks or at least I read that for the region to quell their peaceful muslim population in the Caucasus region. Last thing the Chechens need.

And I am still baffled at comparing Chechnya to the colonies.

Nope. We weren't blowing up elementary schools, killing scores of British kids.

I bet part of Putin wants something to happen so he can unload on the Chechnyans terrorists once and for all. The other part of him wants the olympics to be picture perfect so he can say that he contained the terrorists.

I don't think I would give a single frick if we did.

I tend to root for the cutest figure skater (regardless of nationality) and the rest IDGAF about. Same goes for the normal Olympics, except substitute gymnast.

I am strangely addicted to Curling. It's perhaps the only Olympic sport I feel like I could compete in and hold a beer at the same time.

By the way, no to pulling out of the Olympics.

What the frick are the "normal" Olympics? Do you mean the Summer Olympics. They're both "normal" and alternate every four years.

You're not normal.
