Unfortunately with the fall of the Soviet Union Turkey hasn't had the military importance that it once had to the US. My father-in-law was stationed in Turkey along with his family during the 70's to keep tabs on the Soviet Black Sea fleet that used the Bosphorous Staits to enter and leave their bases.

Turkey as very much important to our military as long as we're still having to fight ISIS.
