So I tried Glenfiddich 12 tonight and throughly enjoyed it. I know nothing about scotch at all except for there are some out there that taste like a camp fire - not a big fan of those. Alright guys (and gals) of the off topic board; tell me everything I need to know and of course suggestions for further drinking.

There are only 3 things to drink
#1 Burbon - when you are flush
#2 Tequila - when you are breaking even
#3 Moonshine - when money is tight

Macallan is a nice one to start with and remains one of my favorites. The 12 year is a nice balance between price and quality I think.

A Scotsman once said to me:

You know the difference between a $25 bottle of scotch and one for $75? $50

Take that as you will. There are a lot of distinctions based on region. Try different bottles from different regions and figure out what you like. If you're lucky, there's a scotch club in your town and you can hang out with some of the more experienced drinkers and get to try out a good variety of scotches and learn about the various subtleties that exist from region to region.

I do not agree with this.

You don't like the "campfire" ones, stay the frick away from Laphroaig. I mean, way the frick away.

Otherwise, if you like Glenfiddich 12, you should really like Macallan 12 and Glenlivet 12. Try some Johnie Walker Black and you'll probably enjoy that as well.

I prefer bourbon over scotch, but I would not turn any of the above down. Them are the basics.

Enjoy.

Macallan seems to be a common suggestion between here and other places so definitely going to add that to the list of stuff to try

Can't go wrong with anything by Balvenie (Doublewood, Portwood, etc) That is a single malt. The wood reference is the type of barrel it is aged in and they all impart a different flavor. They have one aged in used sherry barrels I'd like to try. I prefer the single malts to the blends.

Add a good quality cigar...Boom!

Single Malt is all you need to know.Glenfiddich is a good Single Malt for the money.

Try Glenlivet next.A little more $$,but very good.

I gravitate more towards Speyside scotches, myself. Highlands can be a little too floral while Islays are a little too salty and often a bit rough, but Speyside is kind of right there in the middle. Glenfiddich 15 is what I always keep in stock at my house, as it's my favorite. the 12 and 18 are good, too, but I think 15 is just right. 21 gets to be a little too oak-y for me. Macallan is another very good scotch, and Glenlivet is solid. If you want to explore an Islay option then I highly suggest Bunnahabhain. It's more lightly peated than most Islays so it drinks a pretty smooth.

Be a man, don't disgrace your scotch with water or ice. Drink a good single malt neat. The only time you should order a scotch on the rocks or a scotch and water is if they are serving a mediocre or worse blend, like Famous Grouse. Not saying all blends are bad (Your JW black, especially the blue, is a very good scotch that happens to be a blend), but I like the tastes and bite of the single malts a lot more.

Not all scotches are created equal; try sipping on a good scotch like Glenfiddich or Macallan and then switch over to a glass of Cutty Sark neat. It'll curl your toes.

Had an aficionado train me, shortly before he lost a battle with cancer, to try a scotch neat for a sip or two and then add just one drop of water--just a drop. Then try it again. If you focus, it is amazing how much of a difference one drop of water has on a scotch. Give it a try.

That's because in Scotland, scotch is crazy cheap due to location. In Europe scotch is cheaper than jack daniels.

This is the absolute truth. A very small dash of filtered water( less than a table spoon) will allow the bouquet to open up and the flavors to come out with much more clarity. With that said I never order scotch and water out, only neat and I'll add the water myself from a separate water glass.

Everything the Balvenie makes is great. Start with the 12yo doublewood. Great Scotch it is.

eta: to correct the name (doublewood)

We have some Glenlivet 12 that the OH says is good. I don't drink Scotch.
