I would quickly choose death. As soon as I found something that would kill me quickly (pills, gun, etc.).

you can be somewhat prepared very cheaply
1. Keep all car/truck gas tanks full (or close to it) at all times...cost to you... 0$
2. keep four 5 gallon cans of gas full at all times, and rotate by using it in your car every 6 months...cost 50$ for the tanks..(your using the gas anyway at some point so I will not include that)
3. go to Home depot or Lowes and buy their 5 gallon buckets, at least 6, with tops... Make sure the buckets have a 2 in the triangle on the bottom (food grade, every bucket I have ever seen at Lowes and Home Depot has been food grade)...cost 25$
4. go to walmart/costco/Sams and buy 300.00 worth of dried beans, rice, pancake mix, oatmeal ect...bulk sugar, salt and cornmeal
5. stuff everything into the buckets seal with the top and duct tape well around the top
6. Store in the coolest, driest place you can find at your house or garage
7. Rotate the food once every two years or so
8. buy ten cases of bottled water and some chlorinated pool shock (powder only) to treat water if need be...cost around $50
I have, and am doing, all of these things. I am not a prepper, but I think these are just reasonable precautions when you have children to care for. The cost (around $500.00 initially) is really minimal since I end up using all of it eventually and it is things I will buy anyway
ETA...most everyone on this board has a gun... invest in ammo... it will not go bad. You have a duty to protect loved ones if you can

I'm good to go. Got long term preparations covered as far as food, seed, barter supplies, etc. Have access to well water, pond, hunting etc..
Still good to go, No way they outnumber my cache of munitions.

You do realize that isn't realistic, right?

Nope, but ODing on pills and drinking some beers seems like a relatively painless way to go. My 3 options at this point are drugs, gun, jump off a tall building. I don't have any drugs nor a gun. There's only one building in Montgomery that I feel pretty confident will kill me. I may have to go to Birmingham to knock that one out.

I would open a Soylent Green factory. I'd hire the biggest and meanest sumbitches and pay them with SG.
I'd offer grilled, crispy and extra crispy. Butt roasts, boneless steaks and, of course, baby back ribs. There would also be sausage. Lots of sausage.

hmmmmm?
So a horde of marauders would be impossible in your "bugout" location?
Explain...

My wife and kids know how to shoot. I will have already explained the consequences of capture by bands of feral scum. They might find us all dead in the morning, but we'll be laying in a pile of brass.

Not just A gun either. Make sure you have high-capacity semi-autos if you can't actually afford NFA stuff. You don't want to be working a 5-round bolt-action against 8 dudes.
