I'm a State fan that is going to defend Ole Miss on this one.
There are pockets of this sort of crap everywhere south of the Mason Dixon line. This confederate heritage shite happens everywhere.
For some damn reason, people outside of Mississippi look at Ole Miss as the everlasting symbol of the Old South. You get assholes from across the South that go to college at Ole Miss so they can act like this. My guess is the picture is not of students, but of a refrigerator repairman from Water Valley with his family.
You get assholes like Crunchy Mike and the idiots that defaced the statue - all from Georgia mind you and people just scream Mississippi racists.
Ole Miss is going to have to drop Rebels completely or they will continue to draw idiots to their school that think its cool to shout the South will Rise Again. But like all colleges, they are addicted to that federal financial aid money that comes in a lot more with out of state students.

Sadly this will be a thing that is seriously debated within the next 15 years. That and getting rid of the name "Ole Miss"
At that point, I will cease my relationship with the university.

Are out of state students a financial windfall?
I don't know if that's the case. I honestly don't know. I know people here tend to complain about the high number of OOS students here, as they "aren't from taxpayers's families", etc.

Are you asserting that racist out-of-state students are choosing Ole Miss because their mascot is the "Rebel?"

Yes. And I would bet that a lot of Ole Miss fans on here would agree with me. Almost every time something racist happens at Ole Miss, its an out of state student.
Georgia seems to be the main culprit, too.
The KKK rally during LSU weekend was headed up by Mississippi boys, but not students.

There are plenty of us who don't think like that.
Everyone I hung out with while at OM would have been considered "liberal hippies" by the crowd you're referring to. And there were a lot of us.
The thing that pisses me off about these "stories" that keep popping up is that they truly are the actions of a minority group at OM. No, we're not all liberal hippies like the people I hung with, but most of the student body is pretty progressive. The public lives to see people fall more than they like to see someone succeed, so naturally our flaws get more attention than our efforts to move forward.

I am an Ole Miss grad but didn't grow up in MS. and have lived in many parts of the country. First let me say that I get that this is a message board, and some of you will say whatever you wish about Ole Miss because you obviously hate them and celebrate any thing negative that happens in Oxford.
BUT, as some one who did once live and work in MS., maybe some of you State folks should worry less about attacking a rival in football and worry more about doing productive things to help "Your State." Your state has areas that are worse than some third world countries. Your State is near the bottom in education and near the top in poverty and income inequality. Your state still has de-facto segregation due to the private schools that dominate rural areas. (Which I'm sure NO State Grad attended.) The idiots that pull this kind of racist crap are a product of YOUR STATE. Not one school, not one fanbase, but a state which overall has shown little desire to change the status quo that I can see. MAYBE its time to worry less about race baiting and digging up dirt on your rivals football team, and spend more time encouraging alumni of BOTH schools to work to fix the problems which make Your State the poster child for inequality and poverty in America.

This is very true. When I was in grad school at Ole Miss in the 80's there was a law student from South Carolina (via Wake Forest) that incited a race riot. Idiot went running down Fraternity Row to Jackson Avenue waiving a confederate flag. He found some support from some Water Valley types at that liquor store at Jackson and Fraternity Row. Crap was on the NBC news the next night.
