Never saw Carson so I can't comment.

My preference is:
1. Conan - Love his self deprivation shtick

2. Kimmel - he's funny and a good interviewer

3. Fallon - HATED his show at first. Still think his monologues suck but his show is probably the most entertaining of them all.

4. Ferguson - he might be the best but he's on too late for me to see him consistently.

5. Leno - should of retired 10 years ago.

6. Letterman - should of retired 15 years ago

Carson
Leno
Conan

Doesn't matter after that. Jimmy Fallon is too young to fill in for Jay goddamn Leno. His show is terrible and his guests are garbage. Hate Jimmy Fallon with a purple passion.

I'm 27, Carson retired when I was like 6 or 7. Of course it doesn't take much YouTube research to see why he is so revered. He was that good, and far better than anyone now. But I'm not gonna act like I grew up with Carson

I can never be a fan of Fallon because I'm a fan of SNL. Fallon is literally the worst SNL cast member of all time. I would take Finesse Mitchell over him. He was boring and dumb and unfunny, but at least he didn't actively ruin every single sketch. I don't know why everyone loves Fallon now, once his YouTube parodies wear thin, what else does he have besides being a giggly little suck up? He's just not witty or funny.

You'll never hear a good off-the-cuff quip from Fallon, and that's the hallmark of a great host. That's what Carson was so good at.

Letterman is at the bottom because he's too bitter to be likeable. Yeah you got screwed, you're a "real" comedian and Leno is phony. Blah blah blah. Get the frick over it already.

Wow didn't realize there was so much hate for Fallon. I really don't see how you could hate him. He's one of the most like able guys.

I REALLY don't understand hating him because he laughed during SNL sketches. Who cares? I've never seen it ruin a sketch and it shouldn't be a big deal. It even makes it funnier sometimes. For example, recently when Timberlake was doing his Fallon impression during the family feud sketch, they were both losing it. That shite was hilarious.

I watched Fallon's first episode on Late Night, and I've watched most nights since and every episode is entertaining.

Leno was stale and boring. Also, Fallon is 39. How old do you want the late night host be?

I don't mind Fallon and I actually love it when the SNL guys lose it during a skit. At least I did, I don't watch it anymore.

All the best stuff gets front-paged on Reddit these days anyway. Not worth sifting through the bad sketches to find the rare gem.

Same here. SNL has gone to shite. I think they have too much turnover on the cast for it to be any good.

Jay Pharoah and the weekend update chick are the only ones on the cast that are funny.

I think its more that there is no intellect in comedy anymore. Its gutter humor on t.v. now. Dick in a box? Really? Its like watching middle school kids who think they are funny now.

No, you, are terrible.

Fallon is a SNL legend. He has also found a way to transform the tonight show into a SNL type format. Which I love. Like having guest perform skits more often.

His band is the roots.

His last music CD won a Grammy.

He has one of the greatest minds in entertainment. You know how I know? Lorne Micheals said so. And if you don't think he knows a thing or two about comedy, well then you're a fudge packer.

Letterman is worse than Leno, but both are pretty dreadful.

Barry Gibbs talk show comes to mind. But that was more Justin laughing.

Fallons ability to see how the audience will find things funny while at the same time performing is what makes him a hell of a host. It also explains why he chuckles during sketches.

He's like a huge fan, and a great performer all in one.

Imho, he will be my all time favorite host.

If you don't think Fallon is funny. Well I feel sorry for your sad little mind. Let me guess, you haters have a "dry" sense humor? A mature taste of comedy?

I don't think he's funny and it has very little to do with him laughing.

Another way of saying, he's unprofessional. It's one thing to occasionally laugh at one's own performance, but he makes a habit of it. Sure he can be funny at times. But overall, he's hard for me to watch. He talks over his guests many times, or interrupts them and makes it about his experiences or himself. That's a horrible quality for a talk show host. Imho, of course.
