Are our junior teams good?

Better than they were 10-20 years ago, but still not on the level of some of the bigger soccer countries.

I think the biggest hurdle soccer will face here, and may never clear, is gaining fans with lower income black kids. It's still predominantly a suburban white kids sport.

You do realize soccer is now one of the most popular sports with our nations youth right?

If WW2 were going on we'd be fricked considering our nations youth. They suck.

It's how we approach the youth game. We need academies to develop our young talent, we need our players to get to top European acadamies. Inatead, we follow the football model or import German Americans who went through the academy process.

The MLS is starting to get it going but we're still way behind. Technique need to be improved greatly. We've got the athletes. We just need to modernize our youth development and our entire program. Klinsmann too has started this but it takes time.

America will be a top 10 soccer nation by 2030.

The issue with the U.S against places like Europe and South America are due to youth development.

Those guys eat sleep and breath soccer from as soon as they can walk. The best of the best get funneled into the Bundesliga youth programs. I.E, Bayern Munich, Dortmund, Schalke, Leverkusen, etc. and receive world class training all the way up until they can make their way into the Bundesliga or head to other Major leagues through out Europe.

Trust me, being married to a German, this topic doesn't die.

ETA: Didn't read the responses before answering. Sorry for the recycling of info

my son's club is associated with Liverpool FC America currently. We get 3 guys every 6 months from their minors who come over and coach a few teams and lead clinics throughout the year.

we have one german coach who played in WC decades ago as well.

Right. We're starting to get at it, but these acadamies are basically schools where you learn how to play soccer. It's a great jumping off point.

What position does our son play? I was a budding central mid who's athletic ceiling isn't very high.

well it's a pretty young league so it's not like he's at a dedicated position. he volunteers for goalie every game which makes us cringe, because we don't want him getting scored on.

after goalie and a center back/sweeper hybrid the last year and a half, his coaches moved him to striker the last half of the season and he scored over half his team's goals so we're going to stick with that for now.

my youngest is playing in a 4 year old league and he averages 8 goals a game. it's just like herding cats and he's the fastest one out there by a mile so it's just a matter of speed for him right now. we did get a talking to about "sportsmanship" from some other parents and dirty looks after he scored 12 in a game once.

4 year old soccer is awesome. It's just a bunch of kids chasing a ball. The parents are being ridiculous. Four year olds. They're just running around aimlessly.

no. THEIR kids are running around aimlessly. my kid is knocking theirs down to get the ball and score and take their women.

super competitive kid. he literally beat his 8 year old brother in a 400 m race.

this is him. every game.

ETBrag: Ridiculous footwork for a 4 year old.

I had a kid on my baseball team that could probably out run me and he was 5. He is the fastest kid I have ever seen. He is signing up to play soccer in the fall. I feel bad for the kids that have to deal with that. I wanted him back for baseball because as a coach naturally I like to win. My 5 year old also hits rockets but he would never touch a soccer field. He is not very fast but can hit the daylights out of a baseball.

That's fantastic, congrats!

But I have to ask, where's the goalie? Is this one of those no score keeping, no one loses, everyone gets a trophy things?

its not a full team, with the younger ones now they play small teams without goalies on small fields.

Even if the adults dont keep score, the kids do

Answer re:soccer talent

So I'll use 2 gentlemen in my anecdote, 1 I played the other my younger brother played with. I played with former Chicago bears wr dez white. While he was very, very good at soccer, made Florida odp team a few times, he was obviously a better football player. Switch it up to Eddie Johnson. He quit soccer for a couple years in his early teens to pursue football, still playing pro soccer today. Athletic talent will allow you to excel at a broad range of sports, but it doesn't mean you'll be great in another.

i love the faith in america, but i'm not sure we would come out and just dominate everybody even if it were the number one sport. Certainly would be one of the best, but it wouldn't be like basketball.

Honestly if we make a decently deep run into the WC and networks eye the ratings put up in it and decide to give MLS a little more air time and $ as a result that would go a long ways towards helping the sport.

Personally Id much rather watch MLS than MLB.
