But that's kinda what he's asking. If he doesn't like what he's doing now he should explore his options, and not be afraid to. Unless he has a gaggle of kids to support there really isn't much stopping him from shopping around. I take issue with the responses saying "suck it up son, work will always suck." I'm living proof that's not true, and he has a degree that can translate to a lot of fields that require problem solving skills.

Didn't know you like pd nick cage movies that much. Oh well I love my job and making a shitload of money. 6 figure jobs at major airlines. Quit bitching then a-hole. Be happy you have a job and make money....there are A LOT of people your age who are working at subway wishing they had a better job.

Find some perspective. I was 32 before I actually found the profession where I didn't get bored or hate my job after a couple of years. Not everything is neat and tidy for everyone, or even for most people. Often times, being unhappy at a job is a result of not having a sense of fulfillment. Don't pigeonhole yourself into a career that won't challenge you or that won't help you achieve the goals you have set for yourself long term.
As you grow older, you'll find your interests will also change. As Straw and others have pointed out, seek out new avenues and interests that you wouldn't normally seek to learn about. You may just find a calling in a different area as a result of it.
Realize that life is hard and that's its harder for stupid people. You can be a hard worker, but if you aren't doing it smartly, you'll always be miserable. Finally, realize that to have the things you want and the time you want, you have to sacrifice in the now... to get them in the future. Blame Adam for taking a bite of the fruit. It sentenced man to toil and sweat, banished from Eden.

Haven't read through the thread so forgive me if I am beating a dead horse, but this statement is only true if you let it be. Once you have worked for a while and made some money, there are all kinds of fun things at your fingertips that were out of reach as a broke-arse college kid. You have money. Save some, spend the rest on fun things. Just gotta expand your horizons a bit. Do not go into retirement a wealthy, miserable wretch.

Well, coming to the Rant for advice is probably not the best move... I think I would start with a conversation with your parents and or some trusted other more experienced person.
This transition isnt easy. Life is hard, but it is also a great opportunity. You have more freedom than you know. Also who the frick says you have to be a professional engineer? That technical background can serve a few different purposes including sales of the right products and services.
Keep the faith dude. You'll be fine.
PS: If none of that shite works then become a fishing guide on lake Lanier.
