So I graduated a year ago. I began my career about 6 months ago. I have noticed the last month or so that I am fricking miserable on a daily basis and a depressing piece of shite to be around. I am trying to figure out why this is. I have come up with a few possible reasons, and am looking for advice from all you wise folk on which one it is.

1. Truly unhappy in job and need to look somewhere else. Some background info on myself... I studied mechanical engineering and fricking hated every second of it. I had too much pride to change majors and appear that I "failed". My job now is not really even engineering related, but it isn't what I thought I would end up doing. I kick myself daily for not studying what interested me when I was in school.

2. Need some time to adjust to the difference between college life and real world. It is very different going from college life to the real world. Perhaps I need more time to come to peace with the fact that the fun part of life is over. Perhaps eventually I will just accept the shitty life that is the real world where most people spend at least 5 out of the 7 days a week doing something they don't give a frick about.

3. I am a millennial bitch that needs to suck it up. My parents didn't beat me enough, I think I am special, etc.

So everybody, which one is it?

As someone pushing 50, I highly recommend you start looking elsewhere if you are truly unhappy. Even if you have to go back to school, I recommend doing it now as opposed to later when life makes it harder to do (married/kids/mortgage ect)

Perhaps this man just needs more profound pleasures, I know I've found them.

Nothing like discussing Tchaikovsky and White Privilege on an SEC forum.

Explore new options with a MechE degree. You'd be surprised how versatile one of the traditional engineering degrees can be.

Or, use your higher than average salary to raise absolute hell on the weekends and hang yourself with a belt in a closet in 10 years.

This is likely true but not totally to blame for your current situation. If you realize you are unhappy with your chosen profession now is the time to make a change. Don't spend the next 10-15 years wondering what might have been. This is what a lot of people do and they are rarely pleasant to work with

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
That quote is BS, but its a lot better when you love your job.

99.9% this. I'm also engineering but it interests me and having money fricking rocks. Do you have friends around, or did the job take you away from your circle? Find a job that lets you balance paying the bills with at least a mild interest in it and having a social life. Don't limit yourself to just engineering related jobs, plenty of people will hire someone just based on the fact you busted your arse for a tough degree and can solve problems. College is honestly pretty overrated for those who actually had hard majors, the post college years while you're still young should be where it's at.

if you truly enjoy your job, you're one of a few lucky ones.

When life makes major changes, it takes time to adjust. I Have had a few big life changes myself and it took me a while every time to adjust to it

Do not make any fast judgements. Get involved with something outside of work. Possibly with people from your work. Start to build new relationships. It will help

Step 1: suck it up and just be awesome at your job. Eventually, they'll promote you to something more interesting.

Step 2: quite watching tv and goofing off on social media and pursue your passions instead. You don't have to study something you find interesting in school to enjoy it in life. Whatever you find interesting, just go f&%king do it!

Step 3: have sex with women. It really helps you to feel much more satisfied about your situation.

Step 4: If you're bored, it means you're not doing enough. If you're bored at work, ask your coworkers if there is anything you can do for them, any techniques they can teach you to make you better at your job, ect. If you're bored at home, pursue a hobby, or read a f&%king book about something that interests you. You don't ned a teacher to tell you to read non-fiction books in order to learn something. JUST F&$KING DO IT YOURSELF YOU PUSSY.

Step 5: give yourself to others. Volunteer your time to charities. Help your coworkers any way you can. If any of your friends want help with anything, be there to help them. When dating a woman, don't hold back, giver her all of your attention. The more of yourself you give away, the more of yourself you will have and the more of others you will receive.

I will leave you with this quote by Charles Swindoll:
quote:

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day. We cannot change the past... we cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one thing we have, and that is our ATTITUDE. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes.

First you need to quit your whining.
Second, man up and go do whatever it is your want to do!!!
The fact you are schlepping around asking these questions on a message board, make me wonder if you have enough gonads to do either.

Quit thinking so much and just do!! Its called living. Best when done full-bore
