It is now called Denali. Several years ago when I visited the park, everybody referred to the mountain as "Denali" already.

I don't think I heard anybody refer to it as "McKinley" the whole time I was there.

And this is why America has circled the drain.

If The Greatest Generation called it McKinley, it's McKinley. McKinley to me.

Woodall Mtn. MS
Pikes Peak. CO
Mt. McKinley (Denali). AK
Clingman's Dome. TN
Harrah's Casino, LA

That's the extent off the top of my head. I used to know a lot of these.

If you wanna get super technical, it's not McKinley/Denali...

Mauna Kea in Hawaii...

much of the mountain is under water; when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is over 10,000 m (33,000 ft) tall—significantly taller than Mount Everest.

You're being that guy.

Don't ever be that guy.

My uncle has lived in North Pole, AK for a decade. He informed me no one, white, native, etc called it McKinley. Seems they re-named it McKinley in 1917, but no one in Alaska gave a shite what the lower 48 thought.

Correct. It has always been Mt. Denali to Alaskans, who sincerely don't give a shite what the Ohio delegation wants to call it.

Ohio once tried to take the Ohio River away from Kentucky. Kentuckians also don't give a shite what the Ohio delegation thinks.

Rest assured that if it had been renamed (in 1917 or whenever) for "a person of color" then we would damned sure still still be calling it by THAT name!

Mr. McKinley MUST have been WHITE!

A lot of y'all remember the big movement of circa 20 years ago to make MLK's birthday a national holiday. Arizona was the last state to adopt January 19 as a state. It eventually relented.

During the same tenure a MLK Boulevard popped up in every city, town, and erstwhile municipality in the USA. "Butt Street" in Nacogdoches, Texas became "MLK Blvd". "Sampson Avenue" in Jacksonville, Wisconsin became "MLK Blvd". et cetera.

A little reflash of history reveals this:

The word "Negro" was solicited by the NAACP during the last few decades of the 19th century. America abided.

20 years later the NAACP asked that people stop calling anyone "negro"; "colored" was the new term of choice.

20 years later the NAACP asked that people NOT utilize the term "colored". "Black" was what everyone wanted to hear.

30 years later "African American" came into vogue. At-- you guessed it-- the hands of the NAACP.

I'm wondering when exactly it will be exposed as abject racism that there is a "MLK Boulevard" in 'the black part of' every town? First it was racist that there WASN'T a street named after The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior. How long before it becomes racist that THERE IS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Sweariously.

Anywho~ Yeah... Denali. Cuz McKinley was a white guy. If McKinley had been a transexual green skinned paralyzed half-Jewish ex-slave then we would all be wanting to gang rape anyone who dared call it "Denali".

Also, McKinley was a Republican. I'm sure that's just coincidence, though.

Wasn't Roger in here saying most all Alaskans already called it Denali? Are all those Alaskan Democrats who just want to spite the GOP?

Why do Ohioites give a crap or feel they have a say in a mountain name in Alaska?

I'm confused.

The NATIVES in Alaska wanted it changed for YEARS. It's their land. Why change the name to some white guy that didn't give a frick about them???

If it was a person of color and the natives wanted it changed to the original name...that shite would have been changed during the 50's-60's or earlier. Don't sit here and act dumb.

Didn't know Denali was the name by which it's known locally until the internet kerfuffle about it this week.

I'm cool with it.

Folks blaming Obama need to get a grip. And I loathe Obama. But this is silly.
