It's a Cirrus. They come standard, I believe. You can also have other makes and models retrofitted with them. They save lives if used appropriately and under the right conditions.

Not even any injuries. Kind of a non-event, other than cool videos.

Three people on the plane headed to Texas and lost oil pressure around Fayetteville.

If I ever buy a plane, a Cirrus is on the short list. That's pretty amazing.

I have been saying this since I was 10 years old.

Glad they had the parachute. That plane landed literally 150 feet from Fayetteville High.

A little plane like that should have been able to glide down without problem. Why deploy the chute if there wasn't a controls malfunction?

Harder than it sounds to put a parachute on a plane. Has to be able to store it, release it, and attach to the frame in a way that it won't just get ripped off. Also, planes are designed to crash relatively level and going forward so it could kill you. Small planes are often capable of effectively gliding without engine power and many pilots would prefer to take their chances gliding in. Finally, gotta make sure it is reliable cause you don't want it to come out by accident or if the pilot panicked and used it at the wrong time.

I saw one deployed by a panicked pilot one time. He was maybe 30' above some trees and near a baseball field. If he had waited five second would have drifted down on level ground. As it was, he dove into the trees before the parachute caught air and he fell fifty feet to the ground. Cuts and bruises but he walked away. The plane was destroyed. It was the first flight of a homebuilt he spent 4000 hours putting together. Didn't have a pilots license either. I thought maybe toward the end of the construction he maybe should have of invested in some lessons.

There are a lot of variables involved in making that decision. I trust the guy behind the yoke to have made the right decision for what was occurring at the time.

It may or may not have been the right decision under his/her circumstances but if the pilot can walk away from that situation I will call it a victory.
