I would buy only PC for personal use, but I am getting excited about my dual boot MAC mini that I'm getting at work very soon.

That should be plenty fast enough.

Reinstall windows. Problems solved. Or install linux. Problem solved for much longer.

You can't call my own personal experience errant. Ignorant and partisan perhaps, but not errant.

Mac.

I use both and the iMac is heads and shoulders better than any PC I've ever had. About to pull the trigger on a Mac Air when I get July's bonus check. The speed of the Mac and reduced threat of viruses and malware will make up for the lack of hard drive and storage space.

I keep a cheap PC laptop for risky downloads and torrents and streaming games and UFC.

Don't' scrimp and buy the cheap HP, Acer, or Asus. Get a decent mid to upper level machine and you are getting the same specs as a $1000 Mac.

I used to buy the most expensive Dells 15 years ago.

I switched to the most expensive Toshiba about five years ago here at the house and it is still in there running strong.

What should be my next laptop?

I need something with a big sharp screen for my old eyes.

Also, what tablet should I invest-in? I need something bigger than this droid RAZR when I'm here in the Den surfing around while watching TV.

Thanks in advance.

Also, watch your porn or other sketchy web-browsing in a Linux OS. They are very unlikely to get viruses/spyware. You can also encrypt your hard drive at install.

If you want to take it even further, boot from TAILS, and your computer will boot and run from the RAM, never touching your hard drive. This means the wife can't see your porn binges.

Worst use of tails ever. Luckily for most people clear history/private browsing is easier to push than flashing tails on a USB or SD card. I also shake my head at advocating watching flash based videos... tails can't always protect your identity when you make blatant bad choices like this. You probably enable java too lol.

Macs are a great build and OS. But not worth the costs associated.

Trust me. I've overseen networks and PC deployments for 10s of 1000s of desktops and laptops. The failure rate is literally the same, at best, less than a percentage point in favor of the macs.

Now, all of that being said, of you have a heavy investment in iOS (iPhone, iPad) a Mac can compliment that experience.

If you're into some design and video editing, macs truly are a better machine for that. If it's browsing, email, games etc, you are literally adding $100s of dollars that are nothing of value to your purchase.

Don't' scrimp and buy the cheap HP, Acer, or Asus. Get a decent mid to upper level machine and you are getting the same specs as a $1000 Mac.

Absolutely spot on.

Best thing I have ever done with regards to computers was change to Mac 6 years ago

Computer Science degree hurr.

Macs used to be a decent machine with a very secure OS. Now, they are a decent machine with a pretty layout, but do not have the "unbreakable" OS that they had 5 years ago.

I was a huge Mac user until I took a Linux class a year and a half ago. I would recommend doing some research and build your own to your liking.

LINK - Here is a good website. I linked one of their laptops. You can customize it however you'd like. I am in the process of building my desktop on that website. They are running a huge back to school deal. A lot of machines are $500 off.

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 5748 with an i7 processor, 8 GB Ram, and a 1 TB hard drive for $800 new. It has a 17" screen, great screen quality, and you can still get them with the Windows 7 platform. Also, there is a promotion running right now where they throw in a free tablet with it, so you could gift it to someone if you don't like it.

I have never had an Inspiron go bad that wasn't from my own doing.

They never had an unbreakable OS. They just had a customer base that wasn't (and still really isn't) big enough for serious virus writers to care about.

I have a IMac on my desk that I have had since 2008. I have never run any kind of security software, virus software, bla bla..

I do not use it to launch rockets. I do internet, email, pictures, videos, quickbooks , etc.

The damn thing works exactly the same as it did the day I bought it. Just as fast and I have never, EVER, had one single issue with it or the software.. Hell, half the time, I dont even reboot the damn thing for months.

Now I may not have a computer degree but I have been using a computer longer than most of the people on the board has been breathing.

Never had that success with a PC. Never will

Regardless of the reason, it works with no headaches. Or limited ones. There is value in that no matter the reason

I use both, but would recommend the Mac if you can afford it...they're easy to use and less prone to problems.
