If you just want ease of use and don't require a lot of business software, and you're willing to pay excessively for image, go mac. Otherwise PC does everything a mac does better.

Macs are a great build and OS. But not worth the costs associated. Trust me. I've overseen networks and PC deployments for 10s of 1000s of desktops and laptops. The failure rate is literally the same, at best, less than a percentage point in favor of the macs. Now, all of that being said, of you have a heavy investment in iOS (iPhone, iPad) a Mac can compliment that experience. If you're into some design and video editing, macs truly are a better machine for that. If it's browsing, email, games etc, you are literally adding $100s of dollars that are nothing of value to your purchase. Don't' scrimp and buy the cheap HP, Acer, or Asus. Get a decent mid to upper level machine and you are getting the same specs as a $1000 Mac.

I built my first computer at Fry's in 2005. I still have the same tower, the same monitor, same mouse, same keyboard. I've upgraded the motherboard/ram/harddrive in some order twice over the years. Pretty sure I had a shitty graphics card, and the last motherboard had an onboard one.

Now. I don't use use it for anything complicated, and basically use my Surface for almost everything now... but I can't see how people get sold in the iMac experience. The costs are outrageous, and unless something has changed I'm unaware of, the only way to upgrade your iMac is to throw away the old one, and buy a new one.

Laptops, I can see the marginal costs not being that great, and Apple's software/hardware integration being something that could be worth the added cost, but I can't ever see myself buying an Apple product for the desktop. It makes no sense to me.

I want to take it and get it cleaned up instead of buying a new one, but the wife is dead set on a Mac. Trying to figure out what all the Mac fuss about before I drop $1500

Sorry for being so vague. The majority of use will be for browsing, email, and kids homework and such. We do have I phones and iPads but I dont know if it would be worth the extra $ just for the iOS. We've had an hp for about 4 years and now it's slow as shite now.

For purposes described, a Mac will not make it any better.

A valid point was brought up that PCs are more susceptible to virus and malware. Absolutely valid. At the end of the day macs will never have the marketshare windows does and this hackers will never focus their efforts there. Good AV and regular malware scanning is the difference here.

I will say this. My last work computer was a quality build Dell Precision w 8 gigs of ram and an i5 ( at the time that was top notch) I never once had an issue of slowness in 7+ years of use, but I was religious about malware scans and not downloading stupid crap in my computer. Several of my coworkers had Macs and PCs come and go during that time frame. I also formatted it once a year because it's just a good idea regardless of system.

And for the record I am a Mac owner. I just don't think it's a superior product per $$$ spent.

Buy a PC (Windows 7), install a Linux OS (I prefer Mint) side-by-side Windows 7, profit..

Also, watch your porn or other sketchy web-browsing in a Linux OS. They are very unlikely to get viruses/spyware. You can also encrypt your hard drive at install.

If you want to take it even further, boot from TAILS, and your computer will boot and run from the RAM, never touching your hard drive. This means the wife can't see your porn binges.

Mac. A PC will get slow as crap as it ages due to terrible updates and bad stuff you don't want on your computer.

A Mac will actually get faster with good updates that make it more efficient and usable.

The difference is quality control. One company cares about how their product looks and feels, and the other company has a large government share. You decide which is which.

Well that was errant, partisan, and unabashedly ignorant. Wipe Jobs & Cook's drizzle off your chin.

First computer was a MAC, and after years of going through crappy PC after PC, I'll go back with a MAC on my next purchase.

I have both. I like my Mac more because I can share everything between my Mac, IPad, and IPhone.

Have a solid look at the Lenovo laptops. Go to both lenovo.com and outlet.lenovo.com. Their thinkpad business laptops and their idea line consumer line are TOP NOTCH. The outlet site isnt well publicized but its basically new product at significant discounts.

I have these guys as a global account and their products are damn good. They outsold Apple last quarter.

I have both apple Ipad and Iphone, but I also have a Lenovo Yoga 8 inch android tablet and a Lenovo Erazer X510 gaming desktop that kick much arse. My business laptop is a Lenovo Carbon X1. Thin as a macbook but runs windows. (I use win 7 for business and Win8 at home configured to look like win 7.)

Download (free), install and run these:

CCleaner: Gets rid of old junk temp files, old browser cache files and other 'crap'. You can also scan your registry file and get rid of obsolete registry keys and other problems, deactivate things in your startup folder that you don't need starting up everytime you boot up your computer etc...
There is an 'upgraded' version, but the free does quite a bit. Don't be surprised if it clears out a gig or two of junk.

Malwarebytes Anti Malware: Download the free version, will have to update it's database and scan your computer.

Spybot Search and Destroy: Finds spyware and gets rid of it.

Also, if you haven't, go to 'Start' > 'All Programs' > 'Accessories' > 'System Tools' > 'Disk Cleanup' and also now and then run 'Defragment'.

Just some things that might help. All free.

Mac. I use to think a Mac was just a status symbol until I actually bought one. I'll never go back to PC. It's so much more user friendly and the durability far exceeds anything you'll find from Dell or HP.

Yep.
