No, if you are on welfare, NO VOTING. If you got time to vote, you got time to mow a fricking lawn or 2.

I get the premise of what y'all are saying and it makes sense. But the outcry would be unbearable and republicans would rule the world.

which is another reason he wants to completely open the U.S.'s doors to more illegal immigrants. WE're already giving them IRS refunds. Now let make more of them vote. It does not take a genius to connect the dots. Despite what Gruber says about

Exactly. It's borderline treason and unconstitutional. By making people do whatever you're taking away a fundamental freedom. If we don't vote, he's gonna fine us for that too? He's trying to forge a country within a country by doing this..pending gets this to happen but.. opening the borders and mandatory voting? Not a pretty picture here...

this is worded differently than kentucker's response, so I guess I see what yall are saying.

My point is that, if the state is providing you a livelihood, you are tempted to vote for those politicians who promise to continue it.

I don't think government should be providing welfare of any kind, it should be the private sector, but since it does there should be strong incentives to get people off it as soon as possible.

I agree and point to the video of ODB (RIP) picking up his welfare check in a limo at Wu Tang's height of popularity

I like the idea of making it a national holiday but don't think it should be mandatory

It honestly should've been made a holiday a looong time ago. I mean we praise our democracy, hold voting as a sacred right and duty of citizens, but haven't adapted to changing times where employment makes it difficult to vote. Although, employers are supposed to have to let you have time to vote on election days, there are plenty of times where that's impractical for many reasons (time, transportation, and so on) or they outright refuse to grant that time.

Beyond all that I think our democracy is sacred enough for election day to warrant a holiday.

We should discourage the average person from voting. Anyone who has ever been in customer service can attest to this.

I would be in favor of re-instituting tests.

The tragic truth is that Republicans farm votes with welfare, too. Eastern Kentucky is one of the poorest areas in the U. S. You'd think the people in our eastern counties would vote strictly Democrat.

They vote almost exclusively Republican for federal offices. Why? Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader. He is in his sixth term and routinely campaigns in Eastern Kentucky on a "libs are conducting a war on coal" platform. He promises relief for those affected by this menace. That relief comes in the form of welfare, thus binding those poor fools to that idiot.

The Republicans will never eliminate welfare it would cause an uprising, but they can damn sure cut out all the abuse and fraud that goes on.

This kind of stuff is used to hype voting as we approach another major election cycle.

This is designed to make it seem as if voting makes a difference at all in the outcome of elections when in reality the winner bought before anyone steps in a booth.

Yeah, it would be nice if corporations had to pay their taxes.

And at the same time we can stop that bum from using his food stamps from buying booze.

Win-win.

I think you should be employed and paying taxes to vote.

ABSURD.

So a hardworking town that lost its only plant and has 1,000 out of work people can't vote for the guy they think can maybe deliver another job opportunity?

That's just as bad as the "can't vote on welfare".

EVERYONE in our country should have the right to vote, even former prisoners. However, making it mandatory is just as bad as outlawing it for certain groups. It removes your choice to vote or not, which is a fundamental right in our country.

Like someone else said, we need a 2 day national holiday to vote. Close everything in the country besides voting booths. Also, increase education of importance of the vote in all state funded schools. I mean shite, they could have taught us more about that when they taught us all the national anthem and pledge of allegiance.

Man turn on your sarcasm meter.

The only voting issue I care about is felons being allowed to vote. Everybody thinks I am petitioning to get my rights back so I can posses a firearm and they are wrong, it's so I can vote. There are some other things I think should be done but I'm a fricking non entity to MY government so frick those assholes. I mean I have a job and pay taxes but I can't even have one small say (a vote) on where the 28%+ of my check they take and spend on people who are able to work but won't.

And I stand by my point that if your family has been on welfare for more than a generation then no you shouldn't be allowed to vote if you are able bodied and can work.

By that logic, gov't employees and employees of gov't contractors shouldn't be allowed to vote. Sure you want to go down that road?
