When you buy straight alcohol at a bar it is still call a shot whether you shoot it or sip it.

if I were to take a shot of a whiskey that is like 10 times as nice as those, would I even be able to really appreciate how much better it is?

Generally, a whiskey that 10 times nicer than those you mentioned will be a single barrel whiskey, rather than a blended one. You'll be able to tell a difference, but probably won't appreciate how much better it is, especially in a shot form. Single barrels are generally a lot stronger in flavor, and would be really overpowering in a shot. Best to drink them neat, or over ice, and sip them.

I would generally never drink a super premium that way just because of the economics of the thing. I have had plenty of super premium whiskeys, but only because I've splurged and bought a bottle. But I'm pretty particular about it. I'm willing to pay for something because it was expensive to produce (frequently due to longer aging) or simply because it is really good. I am less interested in paying a lot more for something just because it is scarce or spends a lot of money on promotion.

I rarely drink these days, but after seeing the cost of some of these I guess I got off easy.

I don't do shots, but I don't mind occasionally dropping some cash on a nice beer.
