JAMA--the journal written by doctors for doctors has published numerous studies that show medical malpractice is the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S..

I've read the articles and it does not state that malpractice is the third leading cause, it states they were from iatrogenic causes. The highest was not even errors but negative effects of drugs. So if the Coumadin that you had been on for 10 years keeping you from striking out causes a head bleed, you go on the list. Overdose on your pain pills, you go on the list.

Another Peer reviewed JAMA article on inpatient deaths due to hospital error showed that 0.5% of patients with death due to less than optimal therapy would have survived > 3 months.

Basically, I'm saying, if you get sick, a hospital is better than the witch doctor.

Do doctor make errors. Of course. Do nurses. Of course. Do people do everything a doctor says to do. Of course not.

In western medicine, doctors have two sets of tools only. Knives and Drugs. Thats it. Plenty to be skeered of.

I think Drs are actually good for surgeries and such. They however, are not that great at curing a disease. Most of them just treat you with pills and want to run all kinds of test $$$, only to end up sending you to a specialist at the end of the day (more $$$).

Drs also miss diagnose illnesses and do sloppy work (just like any other job). My dad had hip surgery and it took them several surgeries to get it right where it isn't bother him. In fact, I think after the first hip surgery they left a plastic tube in his damn leg, which could of gotten infected and who knows what would of happened.

However, I think dentists are even worse. It seems like wisdom teeth are one of the biggest scams in the industry. How many kids get them removed in high school when they haven't even popped up or are even bothering the kid? I knew many who had them taken out, when in fact they probably could of just left them in. I never got them removed or had any complications at all. I know many people like this.

You have no way of knowing whether or not open heart surgery prolonged your life.

About a third of all open heart procedures are emergent, meaning nearly all of those patients would be dead without it. Another third or so are on patients who have had a heart attack or other cardiac event that has been stabilized but who have a very high mortality rate without surgical intervention.

So in other words, the majority of people who have open heart surgery are very likely to die relatively soon without it.

I believe that is according to IOM or AMA. That is the conservative estimate. The real number is between 500k and 1.5 million easy
