Well I'm from the Delta so kids usually just don't go to school at any point unless they're in private school.

Do yall ever venture into the city on the weekends or are you and your wife settled into your suburb bubble ? You need to come up here often now cause once you have kids you won't get to anymore.

Not every weekend, but yes we go downtown and to midtown a lot. I would live in Memphis if it wasn't such a long drive from where I work. It would add 20 minutes to my already 30 minute commute.

Is this a problem anywhere else in the country?

P.S.

This phenomenon for some reason seems to strike in the highest of melanin content schools.

Um I think it's just your area. Never heard of it happening. In Missouri/Kansas/Oklahoma we start in mid august....nobody skips school for 2-3 weeks because of Labor Day..black or white.

Yeah I have a feeling that it might just be a Memphis tradition.

Kids who are in school do.

8 weeks is plenty of time. Even if you don't start till Labor Day you're still only getting 8 weeks you're just getting less time off during the school year.

I have never heard of this.

I've also heard of never keeping kids out of school the first week so they could go on vacation.

When school starts...you go back to school.

Then you need to start pushing for fewer high stakes testing. Three hours of homework is a symptom of that.

We have a bigger issue of students not coming back after testing with two weeks of school left.

What's the point of going back after testing? My wife has been teaching for 15 years and they don't do anything but watch movies after the last state test. The tests are all the state cares about and everyone knows it.

I've never heard of people going back to school when they feel like it.

I can't imagine my parents holding me out for a vacation or something.

Not sure about kids, but in graduate school several professors gave a pop quiz on the first day of classes.

Usually went something like:
1: Sign your name
2: Print your student ID #
3: Print your undergrad major

Worth 15 to 20 points.

I've never heard of anyone doing this. Do they also force them to go for four weeks after school ends?

8 weeks of summer vacation is not enough

What are you talking about. My kid starts school on August 5th, and will have been out for 12 weeks. Summer break is no shorter than it ever was.

No.

To my knowledge, there is more or less of a willful ignorance taken towards the issue. What are they going to do, throw their parents or guardians in jail? That would solve everything.

Shitty situation.
