If Glenn Coffee can give up a career in the NFL to become a paratrooper you can put your engineering degree on hold for it. I would make sure it's really truly what you want though.

GET THE DEGREE FIRST!
Marines are a special breed. Potential officers must complete the same basic training as the enlisted men.
All marines must be accomplished riflemen. You might not graduate from boot camp. Then officer's training is no country club.
I served in Nam as a navy corpsman with the marines. It was one hell of an experience. I have the highest respect for my marine brothers.
Finish school and then consider your options.

I got an Associate's degree, joined the National Guard, and finished my Bachelor's on the government's dime. The options I am currently considering are:
1a) Law enforcement career only
1b) LE & Continue serving in the National Guard, but now as an officer with enlisted experience
2) Attempt to go on Active Duty as an officer

Hey guys, thank you all for the posts.
Saw a question about the ASVAB, made an 89 on it. As far as being an officer, I honestly have no desire to be. For the MOS the plan is infantry.
I also saw a post about being young and not knowing exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I'm really happy with my major in school. It has nothing to do with that.
Edit: again, thank yall for all the posts. Honestly did not expect it to be this many.

No, a degree does not insure an officer slot
So does anyone want to actually explain what a degree gets you, or why it doesn't get you an officer spot, or do we just want to keep posting
"yes it does"
"no it doesn't"

I just know it doesn't, and that's all I know.

It's a matter of technicalities. You don't just join as an officer just because you have a degree. You apply for an officer school (Officer Candidate School, Officer Training School, etc depending on branch of service). The requirements vary by branch and by program. If you pass, you are an officer. Other ways to become an officer are Direct Commission, ROTC in college, or attending a military service academy (West Point, Annapolis, etc)
You can, however, just enlist like everybody else even if you have a degree. In some cases, you may even start off at a slightly higher rank for having it. The Army would start you off at Private First Class E-3 for an Associates and Specialist E-4 for a Bachelors

First off, finish the engineering degree.
Then apply for Officer Candidate school. I'd recommend (as a former army guy) joining the Air Force or the Navy. If you want to be a grunt, go Army, not Marines. Reason being is that the army has a lot more diverse opportunities, gets better equipment, and some other points.
With a few years military service as an officer, you'll be set for a future career, if you either want to stay in the service or get out and get a civilian job.
If you need any motivation as to why you should be an officer and not a Joe (enlisted), look up military pay scales on google. Also, Officers Don't Dig Ditches.

If you are a smart dude with an engineering degree, you are going to be bored to tears as an infnatry grunt. Just sayin'. If you want to go military, go OFFICER. Infantry officers do all the 'fun' stuff the grunts do if they want, in addition to having a lot more challenging work.

Unless you are at a point where you're not sure what you want to do, finish the degree first. As to your choice of mos, I understand the appeal of combat arms ( I was a forward observer for the artillery,) I would recommend looking at using your degree if possible. It will help you when you get out.
Whatever you decide to do, good luck!
