I'm at a crossroads when it comes a job. I'm out of work, and have been hunting for a new one in the construction industry. I've gotten a decent offer from an engineering company, which expires this Friday. They seem like really good people that I could enjoy working with, but it's smaller and less pay than I'm used to.

But I've also gotten interest from the county I live in, and Habitat for Humanity, jobs that I'd rather have. But they are also very slow to do certain things, including their hiring process. Both jobs would have good pay, since they aren't entry level. And I think I'd also get more fulfillment and a consistent schedule with these jobs.

I'm pretty torn on what to do. I've got cash to hold me over, but hate to turn down a solid job with good people.

An offer in the hand is worth two in the bush.

There's a vast difference between interest and (to steal a recruiting phrase) committable offer.

If you think you'd like the people and the 'less pay' isn't a drastic, significant life style altering difference I'd take the job that's on the table.

better hope nobody knows you go to a message board for advice -- all offers withdrawn.

Good luck tho -- follow your heart, not the posters here

If that was the only advice I seeked out, yeah, that'd be dumb. I've talked to few people that know the industry already. Probably half the reason for the thread is to get a broad range of opinions, and get this off my chest. It's been driving me crazy for a few days.

But I'm also a rational minded person. If I don't have an interview by the end of the week, it's hard to justify turning down a decent offer.

I like that metaphor. But it's tough to commit to Troy, when you've got Bama talking and showing interest.

You could alway do the dick move and take the first offer, and bolt later on if a better offer comes shortly later.

People bounce from job to job nowadays anyway. Company loyalty (and conversely, employee loyalty) isn't the same as it used to be

Take the job then start a franchise on the side with the capital you save up.

That's one way to break the cycle.

I would take the one that's in hand. If something much better comes up later, you can always take it. Happens all the time.

Just take the offer you have, and if an interview with the other company comes up, go to it. If they make an offer, leave the job you took and go there.

Hedge your bets. It's a tough world there these days, don't worry about someone being mad at you. Gotta look out for priority numero uno

ETA vote for Trump! When he deports all of the illegals you will suddenly have tons of better construction job offers

I hate to do that to a smaller company, but I've been screwed by employers too.

And illegals don't affect me. If someone's illegal, they won't have the certifications my job requires. And I don't care who uses the tools, as long as they work hard and give a damn.

What position are you applying for? If it's superintendent or above don't take the job then leave, it'll come back to haunt you. If it's something like estimator take it and bolt if something better comes along.

Take the job offered, make contacts. If the other opens, you'll have options. If the other doesn't, then you're not still burning through reserves while you search for something better.
