2nd reply:

What could be done would be issue coins based in precious metal value and let these stand on their own value against the fiat currency. Then you might see a return of the dollar silver certificate denomination and gold dollar certificates.

A penny with silver content = 100 fiat currency pennies and so on.... No reason we couldn't divest our monetary system into several kind of currencies, hell start a bit coin spin off as well.

Good idea, but I doubt our government will ever go back to supporting our currency with precious metals. If they can say a piece of paper is worth 20 dollars and people believe them, they have no reason to mess with precious metals.

This weak idea of money being worth whatever the government says it's worth is why counterfeiting is an act of treason. They can't afford people losing confidence in the value of money because our money has no intrinsic value.
