Depends on the total. For example, if a total comes to $1.96 or $1.97, round down to $1.95. So if you have the cashier $2.00, you would get back a nickel.

If a total comes to $1.98 or $1.99, round up to $2.00. So if you gave the cashier $2.00, you wouldn't get any change.

And you expect the average gas station/fast-food cashier to be able to figure that out?

That sounds like an accounting nightmare when the actual money in hand at the end of the day doesn't match up to the sales amounts.

The IRS rounds to the nearest dollar, why shouldn't everyone else?

Somebody has to do the rounding. All transactions in the country won't just automatically round themselves to the nearest nickle cause stonehog can't throw pennies in the feed Africa jar

If we are going to get rid of pennies then gas stations have to get rid of that 9/10's bull shite.

If the total is rounded you could still give exact change.

Why would you force people to either pay more than what something is worth or less?

Agree. I try and leave them with
the cashier when I get them. Or toss them on the ground walking out. Damn things are annoying tbh.

Why? It's not like you have to pay 9/10s. As far as you're concerned it's basically like paying 1c more per gallon and they give you a 1c discount every 10 gallons.

We're talking about pennies. The most you would ever "overpay" is two cents.

You're still overpaying. It adds up.

The totals would round up or down automatically. If something comes to 99 cents it just gets rounded to a dollar.

The only way I could see it being used and not causing a complicated mess would be if you used a pricing system that just charges all merchandise at .05 intervals..and states used sales taxes at either 0, 5%, or 10%, etc.

No it doesn't, because you would also underpay for things. But the most you could ever underpay is two cents. It's a wash.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say any scheme by an oil company is aimed at profiting you not them. If you got just a few gallons they will round up in their favor so they get that extra 1/10th of a cent while making you think you got the benefit. This is the bigger issue, no modern corporation will round down when they can round up at every opportunity offered.
