A thought that popped in my head. The city has a metro area in all three states, with west Memphis being in Arkansas, Southaven being in Mississippi and the Main part of Memphis in Tennessee. Just curious on the boards thoughts.

Memphis is a combination of Baton Rouge and Nashville with Jackson's politicians running it.

That might be the best way I've heard it summarized.

Memphis is viewed by Arkansas like it is viewed by most of Tennessee. We don't claim any of that stuff over there.

Memphis is a Third World country like no others in the three states you mentioned.

Memphis is closest to Detroit in terms of third worldliness.

That's pretty dead on. Most people from East and Middle Tennessee that I've come across in my life want very little to do with Memphis. They'll tell you they enjoy west TN though outside of Shelby county.

That's fine. Most memphians view Arkansas the same as east Tn. We have more teeth from people in line at the welfare office than Arkansas has in the entire state.

I'll claim Memphis based on it's contributions to music and food.

I admittedly didn't venture outside of Beale Street and the surrounding area towards the river, but I had a blast on my trip to Memphis. Seemed like a pretty cool smaller-sized city to me.

That's because the population of the line at the welfare office in Memphis is greater than the entire population of Arkansas.

I was born and raised in the metro... Memphis is the ONLY part of Tennessee that is Deep South...In fact the city feels less southern with each mile you drive east or North...Once you are outside the I 240 loop It has a plain ol west Tn. feel. Memphis natives joke that Memphis is the largest city in Mississippi. The Mississippi River Delta regions of Arkansas and Mississippi are the cradle of the blues and rock...The musicians from this area traveled to Memphis to perform and record in the Memphis studios. Memphis city proper is more like Mississippi than Tennessee and is also more like the Delta of Arkansas than any area of Tennessee. Memphis is like an island and belongs to a state that it does not fit into. The Delta and Memphis belong to each other. The Arkansas Delta gave Memphis Johnny Cash, Al Green, Sonny Boy Williamson, etc. while the Mississippi side gave Memphis Elvis, B.B. King, Robert Johnson, Albert King, and so many others. The Delta soil gave Memphis companies Cotton and lumber which actually built Memphis into a major city. Tennessee as a state has contributed little to Memphis while Arkansas and Mississippi have contributed much to Memphis. Simple answer is that Memphis belongs in Mississippi and should be annexed. The river brings a physcological and physical barrier into Arkansas while Mississippi and Memphis roads are shared. btw.. The Delta region is the most deep south in culture and feel than anyplace I've ever been... and I've been all over the South.
