Galveston looked like it was probably a popular place 50-60 years ago, but the beach area looked distressed when I was there around 2002. There is a cool aviation museum and aquarium though.

Shoot, it was pretty popular when my uncle lived there in the 90's.

Don't care for the beach but great restaurants and good offshore fishing make up for it. For a beach I'd rather go to mustang island in Corpus Christi.

Galveston does indeed suck but I've seen worse in LA and Mississippi.

Yeah, I came to agree with this.

Ummmm...says me. I've never seen a larger collective group of trashy people on one beach in my life. The water is nasty, but the people?? Horrifying. The last time I was there, I was 8 months pregnant and I was easily one of the skinniest people there. Sorry, but the valley and padre shouldn't even be claimed by Texas.

I have to agree. It's more like a nasty bay than a beach.

The beaches on the upper East Coast suck what with all the medical waste and sewage that they contain.

Surely you don't mean New England. Most of those are are awesome. If you mean Mid Atlantic, then I agree they suck, but they're better than Biloxi or Galveston.

Although Biloxi barely qualifies as a beach at all. More like a muddy place where water meets land than a real "beach".

No doubt. But a 30 minute boat ride gets you to some nice sand and water off the coast.

We have a lot of beaches in CA that are pea gravel, and the water is cold. Not an ideal combination in my book.

Wow, I haven't been there in 27 years, last time was a spring break trip. I'll take your word for it.

It was great beaches and water when I last went, with lots of hot college girls...but I guess a lot has changed since Reagan was president

Beaches along the central coast are amazing. But many people have a very narrow view of what a "good beach" is.

Nope not by a long shot, the Mississippi River silt is carried over to Galveston on the Gulf Stream

while what you said isn't technically wrong, I suspect more of the "silt problem" comes out of all the east Texas runoff that comes all the way from lakes Conroe/Livingston and down to the San Jacinto bay or whatever it is you cross on I-10,, that's some really crappy water and it comes out in Galveston bay.

Biloxi/Gulfport are man made beaches on the Mississippi Sound, not the Gulf of Mexico. If you go out to Ship Island, it is really pretty. Hot, but nice.

I once saw a painting of what the shore of Biloxi looked like in the late 19th century and it was basically swamp like with trees right on the water. There was no beach at all. The barrier islands make the Mississippi Sound an actual thing, much like Mobile Bay and no one expects the shore of Mobile Bay to have nice beaches.

Leave the Mississippi Gulf Coast alone!!!!!!

That's interesting. I've never been to the Mississippi coast.

Galveston also has a sulfur smell, which makes it the worst.

Beaches full of seaweed and murky brown water. At least in Galveston you don't have to deal with the high winds and desert-like conditions (Matagorda, Padre).

So this dude is telling you to stay away from the MS coast after describing his positive experience on Ship Island.

First off, if you've never been to the MS coast you will be surprised at what it actually has to offer. Yes, the beaches at Gulfport and Biloxi are man made, and the water is murky with no surf to be found. The Mississippi Sound is part of the Gulf of Mexico, but it's large with islands spaced about the bottom that separate it from the open Gulf. But it's not cut off by any means.

The MS coast has some of the nicer casino resorts outside of Vegas, and one offers a PGA golf course, and brand new AA baseball park across from the water. The area is also extremely rich with history and there are some historic restaurants that have been around for a while. There are some live oaks in Biloxi that are between 1000-2000 years old, still present along the north side of Hwy 90, which runs along the beach. Ship Island has a ferry that takes about 40 mins to travel the 12 miles to the island. Sometimes dolphins breach alongside the ferry which is cool to see.

Ship Island is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore of FL and MS. There's some great fishing in spots and Ship Island has Ft. Massachusetts that dates just pre civil war, that you can tour. After you dock and walk across the island, the water improves greatly and there is some surf and sand.

Look! It's the muddy swamp located in the Land Mass! I can see why y'all think it is so gross.
