A lot of people do. I was never around a "serial killer" but I was around guys who killed just as many as some of the famous killers. You also have the lifer type killer who has nothing to lose and lives in a predatory environment and wants to be the alpha dog. It's possible, but you never really hear about people just disappearing. There's a few, but it's mostly kids.

People disappear every day. They're not always reported though. A majority are found, but many go missing for good.
You only hear mostly about children because of Amber Alerts.
