You can't declare war on a religious ideology supported by 2 billion people. That is an unwinnable endeavor.

What you can do is make the punishment for terror plots on your soil so harsh that to do so becomes unthinkable. If you are caught planning a terror attack against America or have ANY involvement in supporting terror whatsoever (even indirectly but with your knowledge), we arrest you, your wife, your parents, your siblings, etc for the rest of your lives. We either deport your children to the country of origin or if permanent citizens they become part of our foster system. We strip you of every asset you have and sell it to fund our attempts to squash terrorism.

The only way to win is via soft power. Just like a consumer culture basically killed a lot of the power of Christianity, let it kill Islam.

When every Muslim has an iPhone, and they care more about having access to instagram than knowing the direction of Mecca, THEN we win. I know many American Muslims that are great people and great Americans. Trick is they are shitty muslims because they live a life of great material comfort which goes against the Koran. Get people hooked on the good life and suddenly the religion is a cultural institution and not a political one, like most Christian denominations in America in 2015.

You go back hundreds of years and the rules to be a "good Christian" were completely different. A big one that would undo the banks and the entire capitalist system tomorrow is that Christians weren't supposed to lend money. Eye of the needle and all. That is part of the foundation of anti-semitism- only the jews could lend money. Then some Christian nations starting having international success and NEEDED financing, and here we are years later and a church going loan officer doesn't think twice that his job would have gotten him burned at the stake 500 years ago.

Same thing will happen with Islam. Those who taste the good life will hate to give it up and will bend the rules of the religion in order get the lifestyle they want.

So we should kill hundreds of millions of people on the fringe hypothetical change some terrorist will get a hold of a nuclear weapon, smuggle it into the United States, get it to the middle of NYC, and have the sophistication to detonate it?

It's about as reasonable as any foreign policy we've come up with lately.

We have a missle defense system to protect against long range missle attacks.

We don't need to start a ground war on their territory. Hopefully, we have enough people in our govt that understand ISIS.

For ISIS, just having a ground war would be considered victory for them.
