The reason it should be pronounced "gif" instead of "jif" is that there is already an image filetype called "jif".

I know. I'm making the point that if it's supposed to be said "JIF" then why not spell it JIF since we already have a Peanut butter brand pronounced "JIF" and spelled JIF.
And now I think I confused myself by saying JIF and GIF so many times
