He is a good player, but unfortunately is at a weird tweener size between linebacker and end.

If he doesn't get drafted AND doesn't get picked up in FA then there will be a ton of media on it.

I'm not sure that this is accurate. The word is that he was going to be outed and he decided to control the narrative and release it himself.

Timing is everything. If I was his agent, I would have advised him to keep it to himself until after the NFL draft. His agent might well have done that and he ignored the advise. And yea the controversy combined with his mediocre combine showing sure didn't help his prospects. But if he knew his sexual orientation was going to be outed before the draft then yea, I guess I can see his perspective. Regardless, when you are looking for any job, including a pro career, you want the focus on your qualifications and not on anything else unrelated to your fitness for the position.

I don't know anything about that. I'm not sure it was all that secret around town. CoMo isn't Manhattan.

The NFL drafts players to play, they don't care about lifestyle/personal lives, if they didn't half the players would be in the league. Especially the Bengals.

No there won't. It will get mentioned, but that's it. No great pious outrage.

Honestly, not that much.

Somebody, somewhere will bitch. I doubt one of the major sports networks will though. Just because this draft has been a bit bizarro.

ETA: I hope he gets picked up. Not because he's gay, but because you don't get All-SEC and All-American by just showing up at Mizzou. He's a good player and would make a nice addition for a team.

Any idea when the last time a player who led the SEC (or any of the big conferences) in sacks went undrafted in the same year?

I presume you mean as a draft eligible player (because Jarvis Jones led the SEC in sacks for two years, and was drafted by Pittsburgh last year).

The answer would be Antonio Coleman, who was undrafted after leading the SEC in sacks in 2009.

I vaguely remember him. Is that all there is to the story? He just went undrafted b/c of his less than ideal measurements?

The last SEC POY to not get drafted in the first round was in 2006 when an Alabama LB was drafted in the second round.

This article is pre-draft but seems to confirm that Coleman was viewed as a tweener and that's why he went undrafted: LINK

Seems odd to me, though, that a team wouldn't take a chance on a guy at a critical position who excelled in the toughest league in cfb.

This stat makes more sense to me, but it is a small sample size (10 or so years).

Eh, I think some of the same guys are idiots for letting Teddy Bridgewater slide because of a bad workout.

As has been said, he was projected to go later before he "came out". Sometimes there are measurables NFL scouts just don't like on a guy. Sam isn't without fault.

He'll get some sort of FA shot at least. If he can play, he'll play.

I agree in principle. That's not exactly an uncommon criticism of the draft (places too little emphasis on on-the-field production).

I saw him mocked all over the place in rds 1-3 prior to him coming out by WalterFootball. And I did some quick research, and his H/W compare favorably (as in damn near exact match) to the top OLB pass rushers. His combine grade was a 5.22. The Falcons just took a RB five minutes ago whose combine grade was approximately the same.

Most likely scenario. Several GMs are already on record saying they'd take him to camp.

The mocks have been all over the place in this draft. A lot of the big names have fallen. Some teams we thought would address some needs haven't.

This happens every year to all kinds of players.
