How many of you think your Vehicle State inspection is a scam?

In Alabama, I never really dealt with inspection.
In PA, I have to do it annually.
My car failed when I took it to the dealership --1,200 dollars to pass. Eight things found wrong.
So I took it to another shop. Four things found wrong --- no overlap, none of these four things were in any way related to what the other shop found. 600 dollars.
Took it back to the same shop after doing most of the repairs myself. Different technician but same shop. Found two things wrong the prior technician said was okay.
I explained to them that the same items they found were listed as ok on prior inspection. They told me a lot changes in a year. I then showed them the receipt was from the SAME shop SIX DAYS ago. I had an additional 12 miles on the odometer.
Is this type of inconsistency common? I cannot stress how bothered I am that there seems to be no standard for these inspections...
I plan on going back today to raise further hell. I got a call this morning, now they have to replace my wheel hub and studs. Apparently it was stripped and damaged. It is funny how they did not notice this when they took the exact same tire off for inspection last week.

Yeah, that sure sounds like a scam to me.
In Texas if your tires aren't bald and your horn can honk you are good to go

We don't have inspections here either, but another scam is having to pay property taxes annually on property I have already paid taxes on.

Amen to that. Yeah, no inspection in Kentucky.

We have emissions tests in Georgia that cost $10-25 annually.
Yours sounds like a scam.

Virginia's was a scam. It only costs $16, but getting it done was a pain in the arse.
That's why I kept my Tennessee tags for the 6 years I lived in Virginia. When I got pulled over, I'd simply promise to get VA tags and be on my way.

At this point, I may just sell the other vehicles to my dad, and pay for the tags and insurance.
And I have not even ranted yet about exhaust inspection. Up here, if I lived four miles to the west, no inspection is required for emissions. Twenty miles to the east and I would have to pay more to have the machine hooked to the tail pipe.
Vols I need a truckload of bricks to throw at some M-Fers.

I think it is a tax at this point. Perhaps in the early years of auto production they were built less well and inspection served a purpose. Here in Florida we do not have inspections, don't see a problem without them.

It seemed pretty legit in Georgia and North Carolina when I lived there, but they pretty much just checked emissions. ONe of them did point out my wipers were warped, but still passed me.
Yours definitely sounds like the shop using the requirement as a shakedown. I'd almost want to take it to 5 different places around town to see what they all say. I bet you get 5 different results. Then I'd try to bend the ear of a politician or some consumer watchdog group.

Still no word from the shop today.
Bracing for the next, surprise.

It's for your safety. Why do you hate America so much?

I used to live in Pittsburgh. Vehicle inspections were widely known to be a scam. It used to be that if you asked the right locals, they could steer you to a shop that would just charge you a few bucks and give you a sticker, no questions asked.

About everything at the state level now is a money grab.

That is what I need to do.
I need to get farther out next time. State College is full of college kids who can afford to over pay for work.
I just got the car back. After all this BS work, my right wheel sounds like they put something on incorrectly. I drove it about a mile and got out. The rim was hot and I could smell the odor of something burning and it made a metal on metal sound... I called them and of course the mechanic had just left.
So I start this crappy saga again in the morning.
So now I have stickers and I feel the car is now unsafe to drive...

Yup this is pretty much every experience I've ever had with them.

Anytime I ever have a thought about moving out of state, I'm thankful someone mentions some of the screwed up shite in other states and realize how good it is here.
