Yea, you can't grab a customer. Had a coworker one time that grabbed some guy that he thought was stealing and trying to leave the store. Customer gave him a black eye and walked away with an apology for grabbing him.
You can if you think they're stealing, but you'd better be right.
As others have said, there's no reason to be a douche to the wal-mart people. Just say yes or no and then act accordingly.
Sam's and Costco are different beasts. You consent to the receipt check as a condition of your membership.

How the frick is someone who can't see the buttons on a telephone gonna know if an item in a cart of 70 items doesn't match on the receipt in 15 seconds?

Don't go to walmarks and you won't have to deal with their shitty penny pinching policies.

Seriously, I have no idea why everyone here is so unbelievably bootybothered in this thread.

That's a GREAT question. I always wonder what they're really doing. They're certainly not counting items.
If I had to guess, I'd say they're trained to look for a few things that are often stolen and make sure it is on the receipt if it is in the buggy.

True, but what about Costco?

Not sure if relevant but every time I leave a Walgreen's the alarm goes off...I just keep walking and don't break stride. Nobody's every said anything to me, so now I steal at least one thing every time I'm there.

How is it any different than the TSA choosing random passengers to screen?

Or companies could not randomly accuse you of stealing shite without a reasonable assumption to do so.
We're doing that fricking thing where we're agreeing again.
I've found that I share a pretty random assortment of ideas with other people. My ideology is all over the place.

I'm not taking his side, but I think the only difference is: The TSA has an active stake in security, and so when they search people they do it at random to put doubt into the attacker. (This actually happens on military installations as well and it's called 'ramping'.)
I'm actually a fan of profiling, and I think it works pretty well when in the right hands but a Walmart geriatric employee has less of a right to search your groceries than any other person.
Unless there's a reasonable doubt to search your shite, there's no reason for them to do so. This is Walmart doing something incredibly stupid because:
1. The old person asking to see your ticket has absolutely no authority to go through your stuff.
2. Even if there was an anomaly, the chances of them finding it are slim at best.
3. The same elderly person would not have the authority to detain you, and is putting themselves in harm's way with security. If someone had stolen something, and they found out, the person is going to most likely try to get away.
I've had friends who worked Wallyworld security in the past, and they catch more people with pretend shoppers and cameras than they do with the old person smell patrol.
I understand the sentiment, just think that it's an incredibly offensive, invasive and stupid gesture by the company.

Meh. I don't get too bent out of shape over it. If it keeps shrinkage down, then it keeps prices down. Once everyone takes the "frick you" approach, so will the thieves. I don't want a 5% price increase on everything due to shoplifting just to avoid stopping for 5 seconds for the greeter.

Yeah, 5% rise because of shoplifting.

Just a douche move. That's all. The people are just doing their job. There's no reason to be an a-hole to them.

Something about Nazis, the action, something not justified.
Blasé retort, something about getting off our collective nuts.
