Nothing if I thought these kids were able to translate the lack of conformity and rebellion into looking to their strengths. These kids also have been abused sexually, emotionally, and physically. I just do not think that is a book they should read, at this time.
The archetypal fantasy works are geared towards this I think. Common people discovering strength in themselves and going on to achieve great things.
LOTR series is the best place to start but there are definitely some other gems in the genre.

Lord of the Flies and my all time favorite "Hatchet."

Hatchet is about the young man who is in a plane crash and uses the hatchet for his survival in Canada correct?
If that is the one, I have a copy of that at home I think.

I still read this on occasion. It helps put things in perspective sometimes.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Verne.
Last of the Mohicans.
Great Expectations.
Moby Dick, Herman Melville.
A Separate Peace, Everett Knowles, read that one in high school, loved it.

Lord of the Flies should be required reading for eighth graders. Riveting.

I honestly can't remember what I read in middle school.
In high school we read a lot of Greek Tragedies & Shakespeare.

Three excellent books. I just gave my ten year old granddaughter The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
Alas Babylon: required reading when I was in High School.
Great Expectations: Unforgettably good.

Last of the Mohicans is great but these kids wouldn't get invested in it.
I'm thinking of having them watch the movie (older the better) after they read it to see if their emotions feelings meshed with screen portrayals.

Just a few ideas...
A Walk in the Woods
The Last Season (The one about the back country ranger...not the one about football)
Born to Run
Into the Wild

Junkie by William Burroughs; Pimp: The Story of My Life and Trick Baby: The Biography of a Con Man, both by Iceberg Slim.
I lobbied to invite Iceberg to lecture at our school, but the powers that be ... they shat their undies when I read them a passage from Pimp.
I fricking hated high school.

Not "classic" as several other suggestions here, but I was a James Michener fanatic as a kid. "The Source", "Centennial", "The Covenant" I thought were all outstanding. Warning: Dude didn't think a story was worth writing if it didn't take 1000+ pages to tell it.

The Kite Runner was my favorite book from high school although I wouldn't recommend it to people who had been abused sexually
