I read Where the Red Fern Grows probably 5 times as a kid. I don't recall the Red Badge of Courage though.

I am going to catch a lot of heat ITT for this statement...

It is a damn shame I can not use the greatest book ever written the Holy Bible to use

Stories of Hannah, Hagar, Abagail, and Deborah would be perfect for the girls.

It is Stephen Crane it is about a deserter and his struggle with feeling of being a coward. It is fantastic.

The Hatchet series opened up my imagination 10 fold in middle school. surviving a plane crash in Canada and having to survive kept me flipping pages until i was done. Of course the rest of the series was based on hypotheticals (like if he never got rescued) but i loved all of them.

ETA: i loved Old Dan and Little Ann as if they were my own dogs. Where the Red Fern Grows definitely has a place in my heart

Public schools pay more actually in this area, a lot more. Where I am it is probably the highest paying education area in the area (4 States)

That last hunting trip makes you want to cry. I would hope every kid would get the same feeling about that book.

The part of the story of going into Tahlequah and drinking the coke and then sliding down the slide was a great part of the story also.

Little House on the Prairie series - Laura Ingalls Wilder (read the shite out of that).
Frankenstein - Mary Shelley
The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexander Dumas
Bridge to Terabithia - Katherine Paterson (this one is good for any of your kids dealing with grief, especially of someone that is closer to their age).

Alas Babylon... about the days following a nuclear war with Russia. Written in the 60s.

If you want a pretty good much more updated type of book... read "One Second After". Forward is written by New Gringrich and the threat of an EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) . The book is about what happens when 3 nuclear weapons are set off about 100 miles above the U.S. with no sound and no radiation... only an EMP burst. Fries all electronics, communications, cars, phones, utility grid, etc... and the chaos that ensues here in the U.S.
