If you don't count the beheadings, Scientology is crazier than Islam.

Put it this way, what would your view be on Catholocism, Judaism, Islamism, etc had they been founded within the last century?

What if The Bibke had been written 50 years ago?

None of this is why Scientology is laughed at.

No other 'religion' requires financial donations to go to the afterlife.

Sure, which is why churches only accept private donations. Wait, no they pass around the plate every Sunday to guilt people into tithing.

I actually respect Scientology in that regard. Their up front about it.

Scientology is fricking crazy. If you seriously believe that a group of people who think that an alien emperor named Xenu sent alien spirits to earth 75 million years ago on DC-8 spaceships and blew them up in volcanoes with hydrogen bombs should be considered a religion and tax exempt then I don't know what to tell you. It was founded to make money by Hubbard, and it certainly has because people are fricking stupid.

It's a cult.

(Cult - any "mystical" organized group that doesn't share my personal beliefs or lack of beliefs.)

The Spleen Going Clear I watched it. I don't think Scientology is much different than any other religion.

I'd argue that it's much more easily applicable to modern life than most parables in the Christian texts.

Really? You can learn about what Christians, Jews, and Muslims believe for free. You don't get to learn what Scientologists believe until you pay, 10s and 100s of thousands of dollars.

yes the parables of not being greedy, forgiveness, unselfishness, kindness, making sound investments, and charity are completely unrelatable to the world today.

What they do is reel them in with legitimate cognitive therapy, but then record it and then essentially use it against them to get as much money out of them as they can.

It's funny, I've left the Christian church many times, never got harassed or threatened when I did so.

A lot of churches don't even do this any more. Our church has boxes in the lobby and you drop money in or don't. You walk by it or you don't.

That's a rather minor difference sociologically. The differences in how knowledge regarding the religion is transmitted and the hierarchical nature of transmission of "theology" are very marked.

I've had to work with the Nashville Scientology branch on a couple occasions. Let me tell you, these are the strangest people I've ever met. It's almost like they're on auto pilot. Very little feeling and very distant. All around, uncomfortable and weird as frick.

Let's not forget, it was created by a famous science fiction writer. Sounds legit
