Couldn't agree more with the Glacier Natl Park suggestions...unbelievable scenery in places. Utah would also be a good choice. Also would go with the Pacific Coast Highway, lots of good spots up and down that stretch to choose from.

French Quarter, Chicago lakeside, All of the A1A between Ft. Lauderdale and South Beach (ignore the guidos), Glacier National Park, Lake Tahoe, Downtown Austin, and you have to hit up at least one of she ski resort areas in Colorado during the season.

For starters I would take TN Hwy 70 as you head west then get on the Natchez Trace Parkway when you hit Nashville. Avoid Interstates when you can

Go for it. I've done numerous road trips across the US - some solo, some with others. Too many wondrous places to list almost. Depends on where you start and where you are going. Here are a few out west: Any desert (Death Valley & Mojave are my faves), Zion NP, Lake Powell, North Rim GC, Taos - mountain & mesa, Redwoods, Pacific Coast Hwy as far as you want to do, Oregon Coast, Crater Lake, northwestern Montana, wow...too many to even mention. Lots of hidden places...always stop and investigate, everywhere.
Go for it man!

If restricted to the lower 48, Olympic N.P, North Cascades, Sawtooth Mts in Idaho, the Utah parks would be my favorites. See Little Big Horn too, it's not much but I got a lot out of it.

Driving the Dragon's Tail in the Appalachian Mountains, riding the Funicular in Pittsburgh, cherry blossoms in the National Mall in D.C., sipping a concrete while napping in the oak trees at City Park New Orleans, the view from the top of the Empire State Building in NYC, climbing to the top of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, biking on Catalina Island in San Diego, drinking a frosty root beer at the lodge on top of Mount Hood in Oregon, a serene sunset over Henderson Swamp outside of Lafayette, a concert in the Santa Barbara Bowl,...

The Waffle House in Pensacola off I 10 (exit 7) grills up a hayell of a nice Grand Slam breakfast.

You won't regret it.

Left off Glacier NP -- way better than Yellowstone if you want to escape crowds.

Another tip -- if you travel the NP out west, get up early and get out before the crowds do. You will be rewarded with things you couldn't even imagine.
