I as well don't want to turn this into a bashing/negativity thread, but that was one thing I never really "got" about the Catholic religion. Being raised a Baptist, the one, bottom line, fundamental hard truth of the religion is that the only way to Heaven was to accept Jesus as your savior. Obviously there's other things involved, but ultimately your connection with the afterlife is centered around your relationship with God.

With Catholocism, I was never really a big fan of having a human, mortal man be able to forgive your sins. He's just as human as I am, and he doesn't have divine power. It just never sat well with me that you can go to a regular guy and he can "forgive" you of your sins.

Well, there's the issue.

You guys and all Protestants were founded by a loon who believed farting kept spirits away and a King that wanted a divorce.

God named Peter the first Pope and "built his church" around him. That would be the Catholic Church.

I'm going with God on this one.

I literally want you to take a dildo and GFY. You're the worst athiest I've ever known. You should feel bad about yourself and how you've let Carl Sagan and Richard Dawkins down

That's very Christlike of you.

Uh yeah, so am I. In the sense that God is the only one who can forgive you of your sins. A pope is just a mortal man like you or me. He sins everyday, just like you or me. The fact that he can forgive you of your sins just doesn't really make much sense to me.

And as I said before, I'm not talking crap about it. Everyone is perfectly welcome to believe what they want. I'm not saying one is right and the other is wrong...just what I personally believe.

Also Matthew 16:19

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

And John 20: 22-23
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Bottom line, the only way you or anyone else will be allowed to enter the kingdom of Heaven is thru the shed blood of Jesus Christ. He was The sin sacrifice. Any who believe in Him and call on His holy name will be saved.
You are responsible for your relationship with God. No one else.

Metaphorical church. Not Catholic Church saying: You can't go to heaven unless you take communion from our priests and follow our rules.

Jesus never said that church was the way to salvation.

In fact, what he said was:

Acts 4:12: "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Honestly, I interpret that quote, and several other by Jesus, to be warnings against the trappings of the modern churches that he knew would grow up to twist and manipulate his message. He is saying explicitly: Do not listed to any man who tells you that he knows the path to salvation. The path is through me. Such as:

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Haven't all sins been forgivable except not accepting Christ as your lord and savior?

I know this thread is probably derailed by now but yes this is true. I don't see the big deal with this. All sins can be forgiven through our Lord Jesus Christ.

As a Christian I view abortion as murder and murder is a sin. I view being angry/lying/cursing as a sin. All of these things can be forgiven

ETA: it's important to emphasize that from God's perspective all sins are equal

I don't view the Catholic church of today as Christanity. I would put it in the same book as Mormonism.
