Saw this on Facebook. It at least puts their crazy antics into better focus. Usually the best way to find the real truth and motivations of a group, is to look for the financial aspect. Looks like this is just another example of the fact.

Assuming the leadership are lawyers, any suit would be pure profit.
Of course, they probably don't get hit very often and no judge is going to drop the hammer on the defendant for those assholes.

And lawsuits are how WBC supports itself, that's been the case for years. The deep pockets are cities and municipalities. They get into confrontations with people when they engage in their offensive protesting, then claim the local police didn't protect their right to free speech. I don't think they've ever gotten a huge payday though, they're too obvious.

They don't even try. If you've ever worked with a corporate legal department, you know that everything gets settled. Everything. Municipalities hardly defend anything either. They profit on volume.
They're all lawyers whose day job is to file lawsuits against corporations and municipalities.

I believe several of the Phelps family are in law for this reason.
I know when they'd come protest he Kentucky Derby the local frats over at UofL basically were given cheat sheets of what they could/couldn't do to antagonize them to avoid crossing any legal lines that they like to exploit.

I used to go on their web forum to troll them. They really are as angry as they come across, if their forum was any indication.
How do they get around invest laws? Are there legal loopholes?

Would be poetic justice. I saw some of their protest of a memorial service in Columbia MO for two teenage girls murdered by their father. (The parents divorced, mom was having a lesbian affair, dad killed his ex-wife, ex-MIL and 2 daughters on Thanksgiving day; the only one he didn't kill was his son. WBC protested the memorial service held at the girls high school, which was very close to my home.)
Those assholes deserve whatever could possibly be done to them. They are beyond simply disgusting and offensive, they are evil.

I'm actually surprised one of them hasn't been killed yet. I don't think I've even read a story about any of them being really physically harmed.

In Texas, cities are insured by TML (Texas Municipal League), but the city itself is responsible for something like the first $25K. So, if a suit has ANY merit whatsoever and won't be immediately dismissed, TML just tells the city to cut them a check.
We got sued years ago because another county had issued an arrest warrant for the wrong guy. Same name as their suspect, but different DOB, DL number, and social security number. Now, the plaintiff had a very valid suit against the county that issued the warrant, but the suit against my agency was frivolous. Still, the city cut him a check for $5K just to go away because our attorney would've charged us more to get it dismissed.

It's why I've never paid much attention to them.
Sad thing about it that most of those sheep out there protesting will never see any of the cash.

They decided the risk wasn't worth it in Chattanooga.
The mayor and city council made the memorial sites 'protected memorial services'.
The people of this town were very vocal and point blank promised to frick them up with physical violence if they showed up at the funerals held here.
