The reason is the creator had always wanted to push for Gohan being the main character after a certain point. Goku was supposed to be permanently dead after the second time, but readers weren't having any of that shite.. That's why Goku was brought back from the dead once again. After that he just said frick it with Gohan and made him irrelevant.
ETA: I google fu'd the story because it has been a while since I have even thought about this. It seems that the creator Akira Toriyama, changed his mind himself after evaluating Gohan and deciding that he couldn't carry the main role. I'm sure fan backlash played a little role, because there was quite a bit of resentment over Goku's second death.

DBZ is probably the dumbest, most pointless show ever.... like, on par with SpongeBob pointless.
All they do is go "Aaaaaahhhhhhh!", "Eeehhhhhhhh!", And "Errrrrrrerrrr!" All show long. STUPID!!!!

That's kind of the problem with shows like DBZ and Bleach; those epic pieces of manga/anime that span dozens of volumes and hundreds of episodes. Well, that and the horrible filler. That always ends up ruining the show.
For the first "strongest in the Universe" villain, it's all pretty well laid out. After the conclusion of the main story and it's obvious people want more and it's commercially viable to keep going, it becomes clear the stories stop being planned far in advance and become made up basically on the fly. After Frieza was beaten, it was "now here's someone even stronger" with some janky arse backstory like "dude made him in a lab".

SpongeBob is hilarious and possibly the greatest children's cartoon of all time. Decades from now it will be revered in the same vein as Looney Tunes.
And DBZ is universally regarded as the greatest anime of all-time.
So apparently your taste for cartoons is shite, although I doubt you've given either much of a chance.

Awwwwwww... I remember when I was in my late teens to early twenties, too. I said the same thing about GoBots, Transformers (the original), ThunderCats, Masters of the Universe, and Voltron.
