No. Space, or more accurately spacetime, is a thing. The Large Hadron Collider recently proved the Higgs Field and the Higgs Boson, two of the things that make up spacetime.

Spacetime, a real thing, is expanding. Matter in spacetime is not expanding, yet. The theory around the Dark Force says that eventually even matter will expand down to its basic components.

Not all galaxies are round. Dark Matter seems to determine the shapes of galaxies.

Transitive properties don't apply to the shape of the Universe. There are many competing ideas about its shape. The current most popular theory, although not by much, is that it's flat.

If there was something adjacent to the boundaries of the Universe, expansion would be inhibited. One idea, M Theory, says that the Universe was created when two Branes touched together at a point.
So, the idea that there is something beyond the Universe is popular but that doesn't exclude that there is nothing between the Branes, thus not inhibiting our U's expansion.

That's understood in the scientific research community. More accurately it should be "some or most scientists theorize." Some scientists will put forth a theory and most scientists will agree if the theory is solid with evidence likely to be forthcoming. Any theory remains as philosophy until evidence is put forth.
