Internet access should be doled out by brain power or common sense, sadly the opposite has happened over time. Lowest common denominator market will always yield most dull and diluted results. If only little Tiffany was a smart black chick in the hood!

Because she was white. It was some real reverse racism. You think he still pops a cap in her noggin if she was black?

I upvoted, though I don't really think it should be free. I think it should be much, much more affordable. I have just bare bones internet with AT&T and it's almost $100 per month.

This

Although I would argue that the price of cell phones with internet are becoming much, much cheaper so that the ordinary low income family should be able to easily afford basic mobile internet. I've seen home internet plans as low as $35 a month, which isn't bad at all.

I'm calling bullshite on this one, Spleen. You live in the same metro I do, and that is MUCH more than the price of AT&T's bare bones service.

I would favor giving free internet and other kinds of welfare to anyone who has no kids and agrees to being sterilized.

No... Public libraries offer free internet to any person with a library card.

Maybe it's not the bare bones then. I thought it was, and I haven't made any changes to it in 4 or 5 years. It started out around $40 per month, but it has crept up to around $75 per month. I think the listed price is $59, but after all the taxes and surcharges it gets it around $75.

Yeah.

Or at least quit paying people to have kids

The internet is one of the best poverty reducing tools we have. So of course we shouldn't help the poor have access. Cuz of their lacking moral fiber.

The vast bureaucracy of aid programs leaves us spending way more tax dollars on social programs than what ever reaches the ground. We've also got an incentive scheme that punishes someone for getting a job (taking more aid than the money the job provides). That needs fixing. That doesn't mean Internet subsides won't also be helpful.

I've always thought we should pay people not to have kids. That seems to be a logical way to end poverty cycles.

You're dead on accurate. This is the reason that poverty ceased to exist the moment every poor person got an Instagram account.

It's a tool.

My door isn't fixed just because I own a hammer. Does make it easier to fix the door.

It's an inefficient tool for alleviating poverty. Without sufficient education, it's not useful in that regard at all, really.

It's extremely efficient, however, in that it has given nearly 100% of the population access to Facebook and Pornhub. While those are fine diversions, few people are able to masturbate themselves into economic success. (Stacked, let us know if you are rich yet. Thanks.)

Oddly enough, your hammer, with scant hours of training, can have an immediate economic impact on someone's life. And, unlike the internet, not every poor person has one. Perhaps we should subsidize hammers first.
