And the importance of earning one (or two, or three, at some point in your life)...and how it will affect your life as a result?

If you can't afford college, then THAT IS FINE!, at least, try to get into a certificate program somewhere and earn it...and you could make THE SAME AMMOUNT OF MONEY as a History or English major from a University. You have to have that Associates Degree though. Don't do Unions! Get it for yourself...and you will be happy in life. I assure you. If you are able....PLEASE go back to school!

I've never seen a job posting and they had "associate gegree" as a requisite.

What does this....

Have to do with this....

quote:

Don't do Unions!

My union has gotten me a lot of benefits in my position (i.e. sick leave, OT pay, etc) that I wouldn't be able to negotiate as an individual. And I say that knowing that individuals before me before we were unionized tried and failed.*

*Yes I'm aware that there are large issues with a lot of major unions. Just saying they're not all bad and they really don't have dick to do with what the OP is ranting about.

It will make a difference. You, as a Free Worker, have negotiating power and can live your life as you deem fit no matter what. BUT...I would pay $15/hr to someone I have never met before...if they had an Associates degree....over another person who just put "High School" on their application...and just put 'worked since then" in the rest of the application. I would only hire the latter if I needed some random help.

I would then pay the non-degree earners about $9.00-$10.00$/hr just to meet my workforce needs.

It makes a difference guys! Go back to school.

Were you sick a lot or something. You can get all of that without the assistance of a Union.

Before my job unionized they didn't have sick leave or overtime pay as part of their contract (this was before I was there). And sure you can, if the corporation you work for is willing to negotiate that in a contract.

I live in Atlanta too, so I am open to some more regional opinions. But...Please don't tell me that people settle for less than $10.00/hr in the manufacturing industry right now...union, or not.

Neither have I. In fact, in the business world, a lot of jobs that are only slightly above "entry level" require a graduate degree or a lot of experience now.

That's illegal though. Those are worker rights! They are necessary rights that are vital to both you and any of your dependants. I presume you are a Kentucky native. Is this the law in your state?

Knowing the right people & having a good reputation is worth more than any degree.

Define "Graduate Degree".

University? College? Tech School?

They all offer degrees in the " business world."

Kentucky does not have a law that requires private employers to provide sick leave, paid or unpaid. The law for state workers is relatively new on the books and the only reason it's there is because unions pushed for it for all state employees. There are no federal requirements for paid sick leave and I believe FMLA laws are relatively new (from the 90s) as well.

Federal law should step in then. I am ALL for individually localized (districtal) and State rights, but I would raise hell if a cheap arse company couldn't give me the benefits that I need to live my life each day. That is why they are called "benefits". Apparently your Governor, Government, and State Representatives need an arse kicking and a reminder of who actually works to run your state. You have rights. Something tells me that I wouldn't last in Kentucky for very long. No hard feelings. Absolutely beautiful state.

So $7.25 an hour in today's market?

Unions are the product of a failed State Government. The purpose of a State Government is to represent EVERY SINGLE PERSON in YOUR STATE. Unionization takes your rights away. No hard feelings...I am just trying to understand right now.

Yes, I know how to earn an Associates Degree. It's some 64 semester hours, I believe.

Really, you would pay someone who spent 2 years in school getting an Associate Degree more than someone who had 2 years of hands on experience doing the job, you sound like a great manager.
