I'm actually OK with them, as long as they're assigned by a competent shrink. It can take months and sometimes years for an individual to go through a complete assessment process, and this is even more complex if the person in a minor. It is crucial at this age that the young person is able to devote his or her attention to school and their studies and not become depressed or dysfunctional. Puberty can be an awful experience for a transsexual.

Giving these blockers is a humane, fully reversible therapy that has been shown to be successful in many cases.

Exhibit A, boys and girls. They tell you it's genetic, that they worn born this way and there's nothing they can do about it.

Then you find out they take hormone blockers.

Pray tell, if you were born this way, why do you need medicine to maintain it?

This is key. Gender Identy Disorder is a condition that's highly variable and needs proper medical assessment and treatment on a case by case basis.

Too many people are freaking out over a condition that is rare. It is estimated that about 0.005% to 0.014% of males and 0.002% to 0.003% of females would be diagnosed with GID, based on current diagnostic criteria. Those are tiny numbers.

Fear of the unfamiliar is at work, as usual, in the religious community. Outraged fundamentalists are swatting at what they see as a giant horsefly that, in actuality, is a no-see-um.

To my eyes, there is more attention (positive) paid towards such a rarity than makes any reasonable sense. Who is pushing the narrative about transgender acceptance, celebration, etc.,? To what end?

I think Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner is responsible for the furor over Transgenderism. Jenner's giant ego and shameless self-promotion have brought the subject to the attention of mainstream America.

Americans are getting their information about Transgenderism from their lay sources, not the medical community. Religious and political opportunists are seizing the spotlight and are trumpeting misinformation about the condition, relying on the fear factor to convince an uninformed public to see things their way.

Politically, transgender activists have always been associated with the LGB community. That has both helped and hurt people who have Gender Identity Disorder (GID), often referred to as gender disphoria.

To me, it's odd that they would link so closely to the LGB movement because Transgenderism is not a sexual orientation. Homosexuality and bisexuality certainly are.

Transgenderism has apparently become an umbrella term for GID, Transvestitism and whatever category Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner falls into. That's not fair to those afflicted with GID because they have a true disorder; one that needs and benefits from psychological and, frequently, surgical treatment.

For people afflicted with GID, life is hell. Having the mind of one gender and the body of the other has to be one of the most discombobulating conditions imaginable for a child growing up and trying to fit into a social role.

Social awareness and medical research are the obvious goals of activists who want to alleviate the suffering of this group just as others want to help people with similar debilitating physical conditions.

that's pretty fricked up. I can understand the arguments on both sides but a parent has rights to how they raise their children.

an 11 year old should not be on hormone blockers unless there is a serious medical condition and medical reasons to be on them
