Are you saying nicotine is more addictive than heroin?

Yes, because its a fact.

Interdisciplinary research in pharmacology, psychology, physiology and neurobiology is just beginning to shed light on the incredible hold that tobacco has on people. Scientists have found, for instance, that nicotine is as or more addictive than heroin, cocaine or amphetamines, and for most people more addictive than alcohol. Its hooks go deep, involving complex physiological and psychological mechanisms that drive and maintain smoking behavior and that even produce some ''good'' effects, such as improved performance on intellectual, computational and stressful tasks.

''Heroin addicts say it is easier to give up dope than it is to give up smoking,'' says Dr. Sharon Hall, a psychology professor whose research at the University of California's San Francisco medical school centers on methods of curtailing drug abuse.

•Nicotine is: ?1000 X more potent than alcohol
?10-100 X more potent than barbiturates
?5-10 X more potent than cocaine or morphine

And by "off opiates" what do you mean, exactly?

Remove their psychological or physiological dependence on them.

There was actually debate back then. Because of the relatively inefficient delivery of nicotine via cigarettes at the time, it wasn't fully understood how addictive nicotine is by amount vs other drugs.

Now that cigarettes are exceedingly efficient at nicotine delivery, there is no doubt. It is proven that nicotine is a stronger receptor agonist and has quicker withdrawal symptoms than any other drug.

This is what happens when the debate gets narrowed down to something that would be irrelevant if the topic was better understood as a whole... people argue whether or not nicotine is more addictive than heroin.

As I've already told him, it isn't relevant. Since it is how he is defending it in his own mind however, I figured it worthwhile to debunk it for the sake of this discussion.

If he realizes his objections, flawed as they are, have no merit its a start.

I do appreciate your efforts, this is your strong suit.

I'm better at being vague.

Well, if I've united Sleeping and Roger, I feel my work here is done.

Roger: as I stated before, I wasn't basing my argument on addiction potential. I find your overstatement of your case tiresome and eminently correctible (not in your head, just in the record). Nicotine is highly addictive. Saying it's more addictive than heroin is the kind of shocking statement you enjoy (even when it's not true, as it is not true in this case).

What you've done is a miracle of biblical proportion.

you succeeded in getting roger and sleep united, as well as getting a lot of people to post many misleading and irrelevant statements about addiction and other legal/illegal drugs.

The entire board is now dumber ... however the billy madison quote goes.
