Here's my latest kitchen addition so you know I'm siris here...

Costa Rica is the mecca of coffee beans and the Doka estate is the center of mecca. We have been bringing bags back since the forties and I have even seen the trees where this line is picked. You have to chew on a few coca leaves to get up that high and my nose bleeds but once was worth it.

Warning: a bag of this will ruin you from anything less and when you run out you will get PMS man or woman....

Buy Illy coffee (link below) and enjoy. I've used areopress and it's real good but I usually just end up making a half pot or so.

Kuereg kind of totally sucks

The beauty of the French press is that it keeps all the oils (and therefore aroma and flavor) of the coffee in the water instead of absorbed in a paper filter. You get a more robust flavor profile.

With a french press, I can tell the region of the world the coffee was grown in by its taste. Latin American coffee tastes of nuts. African coffee is very acidic and the flavor really pops on the sides of your tounge. Asian coffee is "earthy" aka tastes of dirt but in a good way.

Grind your own beans fresh. Preground loses some flavor over time as the coffee is exposed to air. The first pot from a vacuum sealed package is fine but oxygen is the enemy of the ideal flavor of the beans.

Finally, always heat your french press with hot water before you put the coffee in and the hot brewing water. The press takes some of the heat out from the water if it's at room temperature. Greater the Temp difference from the water to the glass/metal means more heat loss. This is a common miss step, though not vitally important. It's just that, if you're going through all the trouble you ought to do it right.

If you are not going to grind the coffee yourself don't bother with either. I know that comes off as snobby, but it's the truth.

Spot on. I don't even really drink a lot of coffee anymore (usually tea for me) but I know these to be true. My bet is the guys who make fun of this just pour in tons of creamer and sugar to mask their terrible tasting coffee - not realize they could be having an exceptional cup the way it was originally meant to be consumed.

Coffee sucks

when I was 18, I hated it too. I didn't understand it. But in the mid-late 20s, for whatever reason, I started getting into it. Now I can't imagine going through life without it. I frickin love coffee, and thank goodness I've been blessed with no taste so just a regular cheap off the shelf brand works fine for me.

In 10 years you'll be drinking coffee.

Ok I've decided to go with aeropress for now, but I may get a French press later on to compare the brews. I'm going to start grinding my own beans so what's a good grinder for under 100 bucks. The nice burr ones look pretty pricey

I bought a grinder and french press off Amazon for about $50 total. Both work really well. I normally stock up on light roasted beans at Highland Coffees when I'm in Baton Rouge.

I grew up with Grand parents who had a mill similar in kind to the one I recently purchased and one of the perks as a kid was getting to grind the coffee when we visited. I don't know why it was such a big deal but, it was.

I drink the good stuff on the weekends and like everybody else (normal) drink store brand during the week.
One thing I have noticed as you grow older you can still taste tea's and coffees about as good as you could pussy when you were twenty something.

Strange how life works out....

It doesnt have to be pricy. If you can take your time stop in and see what Marshall's or TJ Maxx (or the Home Goods up in Madison) has for French Presses. They usually have some Bodum's or the Palm's stainless steal. If you make it up to Memphis go to the Willaim Sonoma Outlet (it is a true outlet since all their catalog/online returns go there due to FedEx). Not only will you find several good presses you can get a true burr grinder. Was there Tuesday and they had they 40% off. If you aren't in a rush you can hit a Tuesday Mornings and may find one. I got my Capresso burr grinder there for like $40.00.

I prefer the 10 cup Sunbeam with Maxwell House or Folgers - whichever is cheapest at the time at Dollar General.
