When did this filler word become so commonplace?

Basically, every conversation I have these days with a person under 40 includes this word multiple times.

Basically, I'm asking...does anybody know when this word became so much a part of everyday conversation as to become noticeable and annoying?

Everyone has speech ticks, you do too. You just haven't realized what they are yet.

Mine is that I will get hung up on a phrase, and wear it out. Such as "in the same vein".

I know an old lady who says "Well anyway" to start half the sentences that come out of her mouth.

I know a guy whose version of "uh" is "it um".

Basically is new. It's the "like" of this decade.

My wife mentioned this to me the other day in therapy, apparently I use "oh, go eat a dick" way too often in casual conversation. As VBM said, we all have these unnoticeable ticks and phrases we regularly use/overuse, and don't even realize we're doing it.

People start using it when they can't describe a complicated topic, and I think it grows from there into a filler word or when they want to make something appear it's been reduced to its essence, when in reality they don't know what they're saying.

Everyone has verbal ticks they use to buy time or fill silence. That's why people always marvel at the rare public orator capable of delivering unscripted speeches without stumbling over words or using filler, most people can't do that without a script.

I use basically a lot. It's a nice non-committal way of framing something.

I work for a global company and I swear, if you get to director level, you have to start your sentences with So... and end them with ..., right? even though it's not really a question being asked.

ex. So, instead of focusing on XYZ, we need to focus on ABC, right?

I think you nailed that. These days, we have to deal with so many people that have short attention spans,we have to frame the things that are important in their roles.

I admire eloquent speech and artfully using vocabulary, but anymore, it's better to just get to the points as efficiently as possible. Some people lose focus too quickly. It's not that they are stupid, they are just juggling a lot of stuff in their head at once.
