They have a choice, but the easy thing to do would be to cut bait and move on.

PR move.
Exactly. But if done only in the name of PR then it just promotes over reaction and abandonment over education, tolerance and appropriate reaction.

They really don't have a choice; if those girls aren't hard core racists, just really dumb, they need to get ahead of this and admit how stupid and wrong they were. They need to just grovel. This really isn't about Bama. It's about 3 dumb girls.

Except nobody is crying for blood...unless this makes CNN tonight, which it wont.

The school should do what they do with football players who frick up...handle it internally.

Why?

Education is one solution to both issues. Kicking them to the curb isn't likely to do much but allow the University to claim some moral distance that won't play very long in their PR plans anyway.

Which is why expulsion, or much of any punishment, other than education is the wrong move, imo.

Nah, her name is not on the picture and it will be forgotten in a month.

Her name will be out soon. And then all it takes is one google search of her name (which any major employer does now) to cost her any legitimate job she applies for.

Also good luck applying for grad school. "Have you ever been the subject of a disciplinary hearing at any institution of higher learning? If so what did the hearing concern?" "Yes, I was convicted of promoting racial inequality and intimidation in my university sanctioned sorority due to my use of a racial slur in a social media post and my celebration of the lack of a certain segment of the population in my sorority membership." Rejected.

Universities and corporations always take the easy route today. All viewpoints are tolerated unless society views a viewpoint as intolerant, in which case it is not tolerated.

The girl is an idiot and I certainly do not agree with her mindset or views, but the way our society punishes speech scares the shite out of me.

Why

Because a public institution that receives state and federal funding has to have a zero tolerance policy for racism. (Even Augusta had to join the 21st century even tho it killed some of them to do so). And the sorority wants the world to know they don't condone racism.

I doubt Bama expels her/ them.

It's all over social media in the State of Alabama and it made the front page of al.com today. I would imagine national news will pick it up soon. Any decent race story about the south is going to get air time.

People who know her will post it and then all it takes is one newspaper to report her name, which they will. The public wants a sacrificial lamb and they will want to know her name (see the cop's name being released in Missouri).

Our society punishes speech the way every other society has always punished thoughts and speech they don't agree with as a whole-- social ostracism.

In general, the idea of the "themis" of a society is constantly evolving. You just have to be smart enough or at least funny enough to address taboo subjects in a constructive manner.

However, I am not surprised that a girl who feels wearing the exact same outfit as 1000 other young women is the height of the social ladder does not have enough judgment to discern the vagaries of her society before acting.

Don't know if y'all saw this but it actually seems like a fairly understandable explanation.

Scroll to Update #2

Eta: Apparently they updated this article again and the 3rd update definitely makes the most sense. Sucks for these girls if this picture was photoshopped.
