the average dog is probably smarter than the average sec ranter.

The cop has probably never seen a shar-pei and thought they were just doing a routine elderly throat slitting.

He didn't bite. He nipped at a person. Little a-hole dogs like chihuahua's and dachshund's do it every day all over the country.
They're the meanest dogs in the world but I don't see anyone saying that they don't need to be alive.
The dog was not a threat to anyone. This police officer was in the wrong and there's no way around it. People like him shouldn't have a badge.

Baltimore actually charged him? I'm impressed.
Most places seems like cops can shoot anything and get away with it.

Probably true. My dog is a total badass.
Here's the thing, though. I KNOW he's uber protective, so I don't let him roam without me and I'm always there when introducing new people to him so that he knows they're cool.
I know this is how some dogs work, so it makes me smarter when approaching stray dogs. If everyone was smarter about how they approached animals and didn't have the mentality that "I'm a fricking human and this dumbass animal should respect me blah blah blah" then there would be far fewer cases of animal bites.

Agreed...they should give him the harshest penalty the police force has to offer. Suspension with pay.

It snipped at a woman who tried to read its tag on its neck.
It didn't attack someone for no reason.

Eh, I'm guilty of approaching strays I probably shouldn't. I've yet to get bit and if I do it'll be my fault. I'm a dog person.

the woman probably doesn't know how to approach a dog. Im betting she just went right for the tag instead of getting the dog comfortable first.

Exactly.

I'm cautious when approaching dogs I don't know, and I see many every day. We had a lab that we had to euthanize due to aggression so I don't automatically assume dogs are friendly.

I don't put animals on a pedestal. If it bit or even attempted to bite or nip the officer, I have no problem with the officer killing it.
If it was a legitimate threat, I'd agree. In this case, it wasn't.
Better story here
Apparently everyone - police commissioner, city council members, witnesses, and other officers at the scene are all in agreement that there was no reason at all for him to kill the dog.
It honestly sounds like he was pissed off over something (since he WAS special ops, it was probably getting called out to deal with a dog) and had decided the dog was going to die before he even arrived.
I completely agree that he doesn't need to be a cop From the Balitmore Sun story, it sounds like he will be neither a cop nor a free man for much longer.
Oh, and every bite or nip doesn't deserve a killing. I've done EMS for over 15 years and encountering protective dogs isn't terribly uncommon. I've been bitten once - by a damned PUG. I kicked it like a Cade Foster field goal attempt but never once thought it deserved to die.
ETA: Baltimore doesn't have animal control? WTF do they have the SWAT team rounding up loose dogs?

Was it caught and returned for a TD?

You beat me to that one by a second.

That would be Adam Griffith.
I said Cade Foster - which means it launched fast, flew low, spun wildly off to the side, and came nowhere close to landing where it was aimed.

Putting a dog down for biting someone is reasonable.
Slitting it's throat immediately upon showing up to the scene is some American Psycho shite.

Depends on the extent of the bite and the circumstances in which the bite happens.
But yeah...this dude is psycho.
