I graduated in 1990. Are hair bands still popular with the younger generation? I liked them back in the day, but have moved on. Don't get me wrong though, I'll still turn certain 80s rock songs up when I hear them.

Auburn has zero music scene. Their insistence to be Bama's opposite in everything kinda explains this.

Seriously? This statement makes it sound like the Tuscaloosa music scene is booming, which it's not. UGA has the best music scene in the SEC, and no, Tuscaloosa is not 2nd.

Face it, when it comes to music, it's hard to pick who's better AU or UA. Moon Taxi kicked off their recent tour in Auburn, but Tuscaloosa gets Umphrey's McGee pretty often. The Stones have been to both Auburn and Alabama...it's hard to say.

Saw this last week. I don't really get it, as ICP and Nickelback weren't popular at Auburn at all when I was there, and I can't imagine they've gotten more popular.

Auburn was pretty jam, 80s and texas country when I was there, which was probably true for most SEC schools.

The only real advantage Tuscaloosa has is more venues for live music, IMO. It's not like they've fostered great acts like Athens. Both Auburn and Tuscaloosa have kicked off their share of popular regional acts through band parties and bar appearances and the like.

I've never met anyone who considered Tuscaloosa to be a strong music town.

I remember the good ole days of listening to some Nickleback and ICP out in the pasture on a Friday night.

Should this be on the SEC Rant, or Off-Topic Board... Whatever...

Back in the day, great acts played the university circuit, saw great shows both in Tuscaloosa and Auburn (70s). Now you have every great show in Atlanta (1.5 hours from Auburn) and to a lesser degree Birmingham (Closer to Ttown). Who was the last national act to play Ttown?

Auburn goes more for country (Rodeo) which brings in some good acts (Alan Jackson last year). Note: I hate Country Music.

its not booming, but Tuscaloosa gets many more good live acts than Auburn, especially with the amphitheater.

Not many great local bands have come out of Ttown., but we will always have the Dexateens. The frickING DEXATEENS man.

On a week to week basis, tuscaloosa does get better music than auburn, but au still gets good music every once in a while.

Dumstaphunk seems to like playing there (they have played a couple of times in the last few years and don't they they ever went to tuscaloosa). Music used to be much more available though. I remember my freshman year yonder mountain played a free show in front of Samford hall and that was a blast. The thing ttown really has going for them is the new amphitheater they built a few years ago and bama theater. Auburn just really doesn't have anything like that. we have some really underrated local bands though, but they are mostly jambands and don't draw the huge crowds at bars.

As for the OP, I literally never met one person in my 4 1/2 years at auburn that liked either of the bands mentioned in the OP

Depending on your preference I'm sure they both get good acts. Popular bands like Turnpike Troubadours have played SEC schools, I think Sturgill Simpson has too.

We saw acts like Charlie Robison and other Texas country stuff when I was in Auburn. Kenny Chesney played at Supper Club not too long ago. A lot of Auburn fraternities had Luke Bryan ( ) when he was starting.

In the last few years I've seen Crosby Stills and Nash, the Beach Boys, Neil Young, Ring Star, Steely Dan, Widespread Panic, My Morning Jacket, and more in Tuscaloosa.

Auburn gets bigger acts at fraternity houses than in the bars, usually.

Exactly. In my time at AU, Hootie and the Blowfish (when they were really big), Allman Bros, Brooks & Dunn and Tim McGraw all played at Beard-Eaves. I remember Kenny Chesney playing at Supper Club and Pat Green at what is now Skybar.

Now outside of the rodeo and the one Tim Hudson Family Foundation show with Luke Bryan, I don't know of any big name acts to play in Auburn or on campus. Granted I have only gone back for football games since 2004, but I think I would have seen/heard about big shows even though I am not on campus.

Just saw Umphrey's McGee a few weeks ago at the T-Town amphitheater. Great show. Really want to see STS9 in t-town.

To be fair, for purely college shows (fraternity houses and bars), there isn't a lot of interest in huge acts these days, at least from the real live music crowd.

University shows will still bring in big radio acts which draws the masses, but those aren't the people influencing who comes to the bars.
