A dude (and I use that term loosely) I worked with in college was named Jeff but he was pre-op and taking hormones and insisted on being called Rebecca. Some wag insisted on calling him Jeffica. He got fired eventually because he refused to not use the women's restroom. Guy would probably have a good lawsuit now.

This thread has provoked a unique blend of laughter and anger...

To even suggest that identifying as the gender you're naturally born with is a disease makes me want to lobotomize people

I'm like 99% sure the info graphic in the OP is satirizing the religious right's ideas on transgender folks. Replace all the instances of "cis" with "trans" and you'll see what I mean.

First what brought this about and where did you get these images/descriptions of privilege?

Anyhoo... People are people. I'm not gonna hassle anyone for being gay, straight, bi, or trans. Even if someone takes me aback with their appearance at first or views I don't agree with and/or strike me as odd/strange, I'll do my damndest to always treat them with respect and find common ground and if they're good peeps I'd be happy to have them as friends. My basic rule is call people what they want to be called - doesn't matter who they are gay, straight, christian, muslim, mormon, alternative relgion, black, latino etc. etc. and if someone tells me that my words hurt them and/or are offensive to them (unless it's just something absurd but even then I'll at least think about what they have to say on the matter) I'll do my best to stop using it. I just think that's the way we ought to treat everyone we encounter. Live and let live.

That said, looking at the post defining cisgendered privilege it seems to me that it's flawed. Trans folk who blend in and know one would ever take for trans - do they have cisgendered privilege? Cisgendered straight folk who are androgynous looking and/or look like the opposite - what about them? Gay folk who are cisgendered and aren't trying to look like the opposite sex but who fall into the same category as the straight folks I just mentioned - what of them? A lot of people encounter similar issues - not all of them like the medical issue or prison issue but a lot of those on the list.

Asking about the post/where those claims came from, saying what is posted about privilege is hardly applicable to everyone and sometimes applies to cisgendered people of all stripes. It's relevant to what's posted.

Also included my philosophy is live and live and treat people with respect even if I don't agree with them or they creep me out - again relevant.

Sorry for not much phasing me. I'm a chill person. Takes a lot more than this to get me freaked out or laughing.

I appreciate that blue but trust me if I were trans or anything else I'd let y'all know and laugh my arse off as some of y'all squirmed. To me, it's no big deal although I admit there have been some trans who freaked me the hell out, particularly women who still look like men and are ugly. It's just that not giving others shite or judging them simply for who they are is a big deal to me.

And what informs my view are the two great commandments Jesus gave:

quote:

Matthew 22:36-40King James Version (KJV) 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

IOW, follow those two and you'll be ok.
